  • Peaceful glamping site just outside Santa Comba de Rossas village
  • In a biosphere reserve, 20 minutes' drive from Bragança
  • Open-air swimming pool, and restaurant with terrace and local wines
Bagging a berth in a biosphere reserve is always a fine idea if you’re after walks, bike rides and peaceful settings for your hols… and even better when it’s one that’s pleasingly easy to get to. Such is the setup at Glamping Hills in Portugal’s Braganza area, surrounded by a nature reserve but less than a kilometre from the E82 motorway (no need to navigate along lots of little winding roads to get to this place…) The little village of Santa Comba de Rossas is 15 minutes away on foot and there’s bigger city life in Bragança, around a 20-minute drive away. This is a fine spot to settle in for days out in the fresh air – there are several natural parks nearby and plenty of options for hikes and bike-based outings. Once you’ve worn yourselves out with such pursuits, slope back to the site for refreshing swims in the open-air pool or to stretch out for on one of the sun loungers (for sunbathing if you’re into such things, or in the shade of an umbrella for keeping things a tad cooler). The site’s cosy camping pods are all kitted out with comfy double beds, bed linen and a small kitchen area for prepping breakfast, light meals and hot drinks, or for stashing cool drinks in the fridge. For more elaborate meals or to have your drinks poured for you, head to the site’s bar-restaurant, where local dishes and a wide range of drinks (including plenty of local wines, of course) are served on the open terrace or by the fireplace.

Local attractions

Get set for outdoorsy activities aplenty – as well as walks just around the park, you might also like to check out the options in the Azibo Reservoir nature reserve (15 minutes’ drive), Montesinho Natural Park (20 minutes) and Douro Internacional Natural Park (50 minutes). If your idea of a good time on hols mainly involves views of vineyards (and perhaps just a little tipple or two), take a day trip to the Douro Valley (around an hour away) to tour a few of the wineries and pick up a few choice bottles to fill the fridge back at your pod. To get to grips with the area’s past, pay a visit to the Coronel Albino Pereira Lopo Archeological Museum (25 minutes), or plan a day in Bragança (20 minutes), wandering around its medieval centre and museums. There’s also a fine contemporary art centre in the city if you’d rather keep things more modern.
