  • Well-equipped site two kilometres from the centre of Miranda
  • Local cuisine, theme nights and barbecue facilities all on offer
  • Pool, sunbathing terrace, playground, tennis and regular events
Go canoeing, go cycling, go hiking or go fishing… the spectacular surrounds of Douro Camping in Portugal’s north east are thoroughly suited to the lot. This site is in the Douro International Natural Park and in Miranda do Douro, 20 minutes' walk from Miranda town (a place so perfectly Portuguese it has its own language) and about 55 minutes’ drive from Zamora. This is a region of splendid cuisine as well as outdoor adventures: try the Posta à Mirandesa steak, accompanied – but of course – by the famed local wine. For restful days among all that, the site is excellently set up for your most-deserved convenience: there’s a bar serving drinks and food from Portuguese, international, Mediterranean and shellfish menus; an outside terrace for alfresco eats; and a grocery shop for guests doing DIY dins (barbecue facilities are on site). A bigger selection of produce can be perused in supermarkets less than a five-minute drive… or you can get yours delivered using the park’s service. Also on offer are an outdoor pool and a sunbathing terrace for leisurely days spent on site, as well as a tennis court and organised sports like aerobics to assist in burning off all those previously mentioned indulgences. A range of activities like live music, themed dinners, fishing trips and film nights can be partaken in too, and kids will have a playground to cavort in while parents are entertained by the free wifi.

Local attractions

As the site’s set in an ancient region steeped in history, guests can check out the ancient Miranda do Douro settlement’s medieval Old Town and museum within five minutes by car. Explores through the natural world are a touch further along, with the Arribes canyons 10 minutes away; boat trips can also be organised along the waterway edging Miranda town. Within 30 minutes, wine fans can be adding to their collection of bottles at local vineyards, while hikers should travel for 50 minutes to Quintanilha and partake in riverside wanders along the Maçãs. To drive the scenery instead of stroll, map your way through the Douro International Natural Park towards the Lookout of Chapel of Nuestra Señora del Castillo (an hour and a half away) for views over a hilly landscape sliced through by the river. Or wind on over to Guadramil, an hour and 15 minutes in the car, to seek out a wildlife-rich area home to wolves, wild boars and bucks. Spot the animals, then move on to some culture: Bragança, a town of historical castles and newer art museums, is an hour’s drive from the park. Should you wish to skip over the border to have an even lengthier hol you can get to Spain’s Salamanca in about an hour and 20 minutes.
