  • In Portugal's only national park
  • Short walk from the thermal spa of Gerês
  • A 90-minute drive from Porto

In Portugal's only national park the Peneda-Gerês, between the Serra da Peneda and the Serra do Gerês and with easy access the rivers of Cávado and Lima lies : it's a pretty safe bet that this is a Portuguese holiday option to make outdoorsy sorts pretty chuffed.

Facilities include a playground, a mini market selling daily essentials, a laundry room, an amenities block with free hot water, and a snack bar to pick up a quick bite. Wifi is available free of charge.

The village of Gerês is about half a kilometre away, and the thermal spa of Gerês is less than a kilometre from the site.

Good site in beautiful location 25/07/2016

Facilities were good apart from the lack of toilet seats and paper, the site cafe also made nice enough meals for a fairly decent price aswell as good priced beer. The pitches are nicely sized and not too solid or rocky but the best thing about this site is it's location, the Rio Geres runs down the side of the campsite in a lazy stream of waterfalls and rock pools.

one member of staff at the site was a bit rude to me throughout our stay (I think it might just be the way she is) but

No seats on most of the toilets and no paper provided.

I booked through and payed a deposit for one night but when we got to the site they hadn't got a clue what i was talking about.... will need to check with pitchup about that....

Local attractions

is in the northeast part of the Minho region, the area around the Minho river that runs along part of the Portuguese/Spanish border. Mountainous and rivery activities are to be had here, as this part of Portugal is between both the Serra da Peneda and the Serra do Gerês, and accessible to the Lima and Cávado rivers.

Hiking, biking and a heap of wildlife and nature are in the Peneda-Gerês National Park: look out for roe deer, birds of prey, wolves and many flavours of tree, and bring the camera/ charge the smartphone, as the scenery here is ruddy spectacular.

Less than an hour's drive away and in the heart of Minho is the ancient city of Braga, full of old buildings and monuments from Neolithic to modern, and 90 minutes away is the city of Porto, the second biggest in Portugal and with one of the oldest city centres in Europe.
