Sim, por favor e obrigado… Those are a few Portuguese words you’ll want to remember around these parts – you’ll be saying yes, please and thanks to everything at Parque Orbitur Mira, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the Aveiro resort town of Praia de Mira. Get stuck into watersports with ease from this pretty site: it has direct access to a wide sandy beach for ocean swims, and it’s directly opposite Lagoa da Barrinha for all the windsurfing, sailing, waterskiing and boating anyone could want. Craving more anyway? The site is on Portugal’s Silver Coast, with easy access to weeks’ worth of even more watersports, plus fishing, diving and (of course) idle beach basking. Those who prefer to keep their feet firmly on dry land will be able to keep busy with an activity programme during the high season, venture out for strolls along the shores of Barrinha, or leap into the saddle for leisurely cycles or horseback explores. All that adventuring and splashing around is hungry work – luckily, there’s a handy restaurant on site, as well as a snack bar and a well-stocked shop. For a change of scenery, there are plenty of local eateries nearby where fresh catches make it on to the daily menus.

Liked Jolie emplacement bien ensoleillé camping propre. Sanitaires vieillot mais convenable eau chaude++. Machine a laver au top.

Liked Plätze groß genug, Nähe zum Strand ist gut, auch in das kleine Dorf kann man gut zu Fuß gehen.

Disliked Nur eine Waschmaschine für den ganzen Platz die auch noch kaputt war. An der Rezeption dauert es sehr lange, die sanitären Anlagen waren alt und nicht sauber.

Local attractions

It would be nearly impossible to get enough of this stunning stretch of Portuguese coastline, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try. Start in the area around Praia de Mira, where 30 kilometres of pine-backed beaches and low-lying dunes stretch to the south, then turn attention to the north with a trip to the stunningly scenic Costa Nova and its colourful striped houses. Fans of waterpark excursions are spoiled for choice round here, and controlled swims away from the ocean can be had at three (yes, three) within 40 minutes’ drive of base. Landlubbers have other options, beginning with explores of the pretty neighbouring villages (like Seixo, 10 minutes from the site) and continuing with longer jaunts for hiking, biking, climbing and birdwatching about an hour away in Reserva Natural das Dunas de São Jacinto and Serra da Estrela Natural Park. History buffs might want to get a feel for the area by poking around the ethnographic museum on the shores of Barrinha, or Museu do Território da Gândara 15 minutes away – otherwise a lengthier trip into Lisbon (a little over two hours from base) is a must for museums, castles, palaces, spectacular architecture, winding streets and (of course) shopping.
