  • Luxury glass-paned cabins at Colcapampa in Cusco’s Andean foothills
  • Cocalmayo Hot Springs 90 minutes’ drive; Lucmabamba an hour
  • Spectacular Santa Teresa Valley views; restaurant and bar on site
Set into a steep hillside in the mountain village of Colcapampa, the handful of glass-paned cabins at Mountain Sky View have truly spectacular vistas over Santa Teresa Valley in Peru’s Cusco region. They offer a luxuriously welcome respite from the rigours of climbing on the challenging Salkantay Trek up to Machu Picchu. Halfway between Andean peaks and the mists of the Cloud Forest, each cabin comes with a private bedroom and ensuite bathroom roofed with traditional thatch. Wrap-around windows mean you can lie in bed at night and watch the stars come out above you, and wake in the morning to ponder your good fortune at being in such a stunning place. Amenities on site include a bar and restaurant serving meals from breakfast to supper, and open gardens with lots of picnic spots overlooking the mountains. If you’re not trekking, the site owners can pick you up (by prior arrangement) from public transport stops. Free parking is also available if you arrive at Mountain Sky View in your own vehicle.

Local attractions

Staying around on site for a few days to acclimatise to the high altitude? Practise for the testing hike up to Machu Picchu with jungle walks along Santa Teresa Valley, visiting local fruit orchards as you meander. Bucket-list side-trips include a visit to the Coffee Route in Lucmabamba (an hour’s drive or five hours’ hike), where you can tour plantations, have a go at harvesting coffee beans, taste the produce and buy souvenirs for home. You might consider a foray into the foothills of Salkantay (half an hour’s drive or four hours’ walk); as one of the highest Andean peaks, it’s a dramatic, snow-capped backdrop for selfies to post on your socials. Rejuvenate aching limbs in the thermal waters at Aguas Termales Cocalmayo hot springs (90 minutes’ drive or seven hours on foot), with a choice of three steaming pools to soak in, and have a wander along the banks of the adjacent Urubamba River, with pristine waters fed by snow melt.
