It's free, quick and easy!
- Luxury site in the Wahiba Sands desert, 40 minutes’ drive from Bidiya
- Sur an hour and 50 minutes’ drive; Ras Al-Hadd two and a half hours
- Archery, sandboarding and yoga classes; car rental; airport pick-up
In a remote spot on the north-eastern outskirts of the Wahiba Sands of Oman, and with no neighbouring camps in the vicinity, Luxury Desert Camp is a fabulous option for those who'd like to experience the blissful peace of a true desert location. Look around and all you’ll see here are sand dunes… and perhaps the occasional camel.
As well as that extraordinary setting, the site also has a hefty dose of luxury: spacious tents are kitted out with comfortable beds, a seating area and fireplaces to keep the cold desert nights at bay. The private bathroom has a walk-in shower – and elegant touches include complimentary toiletries, bathrobes and slippers (plus, of course, all the necessary towels and bed linens).
Start the day in the dining tent with a buffet breakfast, then choose what activities you’ll fill your time with. Archery? Target shooting? Or maybe a spot of sandboarding down the spectacular dunes? There are also yoga classes, tennis courts, and bike and car rentals so you can explore the local area. Add organised evening entertainments to the mix as well, and you’ve got the makings of a pretty special holiday.
The town of Bidiya, with supermarkets, shops and restaurants, is 40 minutes’ drive away, while the nearest airport is Muscat International (two hours and 20 minutes); the site can arrange a shuttle service (for a fee).

Local attractions
If the camels around the site don’t satisfy your wildlife cravings, consider visiting Al Saleel National Park (an hour and 20 minutes’ drive), which is home to Arabian gazelles and red foxes among other animals. You might also spot the occasional Egyptian eagle soaring high above the acacia forests.
On the outskirts of the port city of Sur (an hour and 50 minutes), Sunaysilah Fort is an imposing structure dating back to the 17th century. Other sights in the city include the Al-Ayjah Lighthouse and a traditional souq district.
After a few days in the desert, you might long for a day at the seaside. Ras Al-Hadd Beach (two and a half hours), on the Gulf of Oman, is a popular spot to watch the sunrise, and it’s also a favourite egg-laying location for turtles. Neighbouring Pink Beach has clear waters for a refreshing swim.
