  • Family-friendly site on the island of Tholen
  • Heated outdoor pool, playground and restaurant
  • Activities for all ages arranged in high season

Doesn't this green Dutch-based site look just tiptop? And even more Netherlands fably, it's on an island too – the wildlife and cycling haven of Zeeland's Tholen, the peninsula of two isles separated by the bay of Krabbenkreek.

Your scenic and peaceful berth can be bedded down in after active days in the site surroundings, as Camping Gorishoek is in the Oosterschelde or Eastern Scheldt region, a part of the Nethlerlands famed for its outdoor activities on water and land. The Oosterschelde makes up the biggest national park in the country too, so get prepped for easy access to biking, hiking, nature spotting, sailing and scuba diivng among its saltwater, mudflats and meadow surroundings.

(And if you'd rather have city sightseeing? One of the oldest urban centres in the Netherlands, Bergen op Zoom, is within half an hour's drive, or just over an hour by bike on a mainly flat route via Postweg.)

The leisure facilities back at base are plentiful too… Start your leisurely self off with a splash in the lovely big pool with waterslide (a site just isn't a site without a pool, opine the wise team), then take your damp offspring along to coo at the Gorishoek rabbits, chickens, goats, ducks and pot-bellied pigs, all around to meet and pet at the site zoo.

From Mondays to Saturdays, kids can go along to the Beachcomber space, to meet up with the team amicably tasked with junior entertainment. Activities for adults are available too on weekdays during high season – or you might just care to sink down with a drink on the terrace while keeping an eye on the kids swinging about at the playground.

Food to suit all ages is at Smaek, the small site restaurant serving meals from breakfasts to dinners, including what one former guest says was the best plate of chips and salad she's ever had...

The tipi was fantastic and very well equipped with everything you need for yours stay including a fridge and clothes airer. Toilet/shower block modern and clean, swimming pool and park small but perfectly adequate and the small farm animals on site a nice addition. The staff spoke English very well and were very helpful and attentive. Restaurant lovely with delicious food and fresh bread and pastries in the morning. Beautiful surrounds and short walk to small beach. Bikes can be hired at neighbouring campsite and well worth it as many brilliant cycle paths.

Situated in the tipi tent could be a little noisy at nighttime as behind you is the park where children play til late on a very squeaky swing! Also the restaurant/bar sometimes plays loud music til the early hours (although only twice during our stay). Although the showers were free to use, you are charged for the use of hot water to wash up dishea

The bell tent had everything we needed, and it was awesome to have a little fridge. The beds were really comfy and it was such a big relief to have the umbrella, as it was so hot we took it with us to the pool everyday. The staff and people were really friendly, the toilets and shower blocks were really nice! The restaurant on the premises didn't have any vegan options but we ordered chips and got the nicest plate of chips and salad I've ever had! The outdoor cold pool was also obviously a huge hit. Thank you so much for a wonderful first experience in Holland. We all loved our stay very much.

Local attractions

The site is on the island of Tholen, in the middle of the Oosterschelde, an area of the Zeeland region known for its vast landscapes, cycling and watersports.

The 370 square kilometres of the national park include around 125 kilometres of shoreline, making up salt waters famed for scuba diving because of the number of species unique to the region. You could also go sailing or hiking, seek porpoises among the park's creeks and mudflats, or take a guided tour to forage for shellfish including mussels, oysters and periwinkles (all are plentiful in the area, but a license is needed to gather them).

Other recommended options are to cycle, hike or horse ride around the Brabantse Wal, the sandy plateau running along the Zeeland border and the Belgian province of Antwerp. Or drive for just under an hour to reach other the popular watersports spots in the region of the Veerse Meer lagoon and the town and waters of Kamperland.

The city of Bergen op Zoom, one of the oldest in the Netherlands, is about 20 kilometres away.
