Camping Prinsenhof

- Spacious farm site close to the village of Odijk
- A 15-minute drive from Utrecht and Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park
- Play facilities, bike storage and free-range eggs available on site
Look out from your pitch at Camping Prinsenhof and you’re likely to see cows grazing in the opposite meadow, with birds flitting overhead while the resident chickens cluck happily nearby – all in all, a rather appealing rural picture.
With this image in mind it might come as something of a surprise to hear that this spacious and peaceful farm-based site is a mere 12 kilometres from the centre of Utrecht. And that makes this a particularly excellent location for travellers who like a bit of variety on their holidays: see how you feel in the morning, then decide whether you’re up for a day of city-based culture or some time spent walking or cycling through the rural landscapes.
Whichever you select, it’s all very straightforward – a bus service to the city stops very close by, and the local village Odijk is at the centre of several walking/bike routes. There’s covered bike storage on site, plus charging points for those pedalling e-bikes (a good option for getting around the nearby Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park).
Life on site is very rural in vibe: there’s plenty of space to relax, with a playhouse, slide and go-karts to keep the kids busy, and a cluster of rabbits, pigs, sheep and cows to meet. And those chickens, of course – which produce fresh eggs for guests’ breakfasts each day. For other supplies, it’s a two-kilometre jaunt to Odijk or four to bigger Bunnik.
All pitches here have a little tiled patio for tables and the like, plus access to laundry facilities, free wifi and a modern heated toilet/shower block.

Local attractions
Ready for rural rambles? This is a fab area for strolls, hikes and bike rides, and you’ll barely need to travel to hit the trails. A great place to start is the 28-kilometre path that’s been built alongside the Kromme Rijn river: Camping Prinsenhof is right in the middle of it, so it’s easy to explore the whole lot in two sections.
Elsewhere nearby, there are some 500 kilometres of hiking trails around Odijk and heaps more space to explore in the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park, 15 kilometres away and a splendid place to stroll among woods, heaths and fenland. Look out for fresh fruit stalls along the way: this area is famed for its cherries, strawberries, apples and pears.
For a change of scenery, pay a visit to the Waterline Museum Fort bij Vechten or Fort Rijnauwen (both 10 minutes’ drive) or take a walk around pretty Wijk bij Duurstede (15 minutes). And of course you can’t miss Utrecht (15 minutes), strolling by the canals, visiting the Miffy Museum and delving into DOMunder for an interactive take on local history.
