  • Lodge accommodation by the canal in West-Graftdijk
  • Volendam, De Zaanse Schans and Alkmaar within 20 minutes' drive
  • Indoor and outdoor pools, two restaurants, beach and boat hire on site
If you’re looking to get to know traditional Dutch culture on your holiday, North Holland is a great place to do just that – this is an area that has lots of classic views, traditional towns, seaside scenery and places to taste things like artisan cheese. A stay at EuroParcs De Rijp can expand that experience even further, as it’s been constructed in the old Zaan style on the banks of a canal in West-Graftdijk. Getting out to explore is easy, either with your walking boots on, pedalling a bike or by hiring a small boat on site for local outings (or longer ones all the way to Amsterdam if you like). Getting out and about is fabulous around here, but so is time spent on site. The park has plenty to keep you occupied, including several swimming options (an indoor pool, an outdoor pool and a sandy beach area), a games room and a petting zoo and animal meadow where you can get to know various cute creatures. Accommodation here is in smartly designed lodges each with an ensuite bathroom and well-equipped kitchen. The park has a food shop to provide all the bits you need to cook your meals, along with a restaurant and a snack bar/takeaway for those times when you’re just not in the mood for such things.

Tiny House microlodge

Liked: The location was great and an easy drive to many pretty towns and tourist attractions. The laundrette was easy to use and modern machines. The house was warm.

Disliked: The tiny house was not clean. The sofa was threadbare and in poor condition. The duvet’s smelt and had not been washed. The shower temperature was not consistent. Patio furniture not clean. Unable to find large bins near our house. We were located near a busy road and aeroplane flight path. The location is great for visiting local towns of Alkmaar Edam Zaanse windmills and Keukenhof. Very expensive site for the condition and upkeep of the property we stayed in. The site felt unloved and uncared for.

Local attractions

Water is never far away at EuroParcs De Rijp – as well as being able to get out onto the canal by the park, you can also get to the coast or the banks of the IJsselmeer with a drive of less than half an hour. A particularly fine place to head to is the fishing village of Volendam (20 minutes’ drive), which has a maze of old streets to wander through and lots of fish restaurants. For another truly local taste, it has to be an outing to Alkmaar (15 minutes), where you can take a cheese-themed cruise or see the traditional cheese carriers on the Waagplein on Friday mornings. There are lots of classic Dutch views to take in over in De Zaanse Schans (15 minutes), where you can see old wooden houses and mills, watch clogs being made and try a bit more cheese. An outing to Amsterdam could well be on the cards too – you can drive to the city’s outskirts in about 25 minutes or take public transport to the city centre in about an hour. For more low-key outings, pick up details of good local walking/bike routes in reception or take the kids to Sprookjeswonderland (35 minutes) for a fairytale-themed day out.
