Boats, bike rides and a beach… and all just half an hour from Amsterdam – what an outstanding location has EuroParcs Camping en Jachthaven Uitdam.
Five kilometres from the nearest town, Monnickendam, this peaceful site has its own marina on 't Markermeer for watergoing types who’d like to bring a boat or hire one from the harbour. Set sail from here to be within easy skippering distance of Volendam and the pretty island of Marken, or you could navigate your way along the IJ river to bag a berth in Amsterdam.
If you’d rather stick to dry land, dank je, there are bikes for hire to take out on local cycle paths, or you could plonk down on the beach for days of swims and sandcastle building. For a brief break from the beach, there’s a playground to keep the kids happy, and an ice cream parlour for cooling sweet treats.
More substantial feasts can be acquired at the snack bar or grilled up on a barbecue (supplies available at the supermarket in Monnickendam) as you gaze out over the watery views.

Local attractions
If you’d like to tick off lots of classic Dutch sights, it’s half an hour or so's drive to the windmills of Zaanse Schans, and around 45 minutes to get to the famed cheese market in Alkmaar. Wend your way through the streets of Volendam, a fishing village 20 minutes’ drive away, and you may well encounter traditional dress, music and fish dishes.
Day trips to Amsterdam (by road, river or on a bike for the energetic) are highly recommended too. There are some fab museums here (the Rijksmuseum, Anne Frank House and Van Gogh Museum, for example) but there’s also much to be said for just wandering along the canalside paths – and in a city of 165 canals there are plenty of those to choose from.
Golfing types may well want to bring along their clubs to whack a few balls around at one of the local courses – there are five within a 40-minute drive.
