How’s this for an utterly splendid holiday idea: setting up camp surrounded by vast sand dunes within walking distance of the beach? This rather excellent setup is exactly what awaits at Duincamping De Lepelaar, a dog-friendly site on the edge of the Zwanenwater nature reserve. The site is set in the midst of the sand dunes, so it’s a hugely peaceful spot – and all the more so given that there are car-free and bike-free rules in place to keep the landscape and associated wildlife safe from harm. As a bonus, this also means that kids can have a good run around in relative safety – always a fine thing on a family holiday. Facilities have all been set up to make family holidays nice and easy too – you’ll have access to showers, toilets, a launderette and a food shop, along with a play area and a snack bar. Those who fancy checking out the local food scene can head out to several restaurants within 10 minutes’ drive, either in Callantsoog or along the local beach. Sint Maartenszee beach is handily within walking and cycling distance, so it’s pretty straightforward to escape from the dunes and find some flat sand for sunbathing and games. The quickest way to get there is by bicycle, which takes around 10 minutes. On the other hand, bigger sand dunes are also nearby. Schoorlse Duinen, 15 minutes’ drive away, is a spectacular place for walking or cycling through dunes and forests – and kids are likely to love the natural sandpit (one of the biggest in the country, in fact).

Electric grass and sand tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Die Lage am Naturschutzgebiet ist wunderschön. Viele verschiedene Dünen-stellplätze mit toller Aussicht.

Disliked Zelte sollten sturmsicher und regenfest sein, die Camper auch ! Der Platz ist autofrei, die Ausrüstung muss per Karre zum Stellplatz gebracht werden, das ist herausfordernd aber sportlich.

Sint Maartenszee is said to have the Netherlands’ highest average number of annual sunshine hours, so it’s quite likely you may want to spend a good many of those hours on the beach, playing games, swimming or just stretching out on the sand. For a different coastal view, make an outing to Petten aan Zee (five minutes’ drive) – the seaside village has another lovely beach and a promenade and viewpoint. For a break from the beach, take off to Den Helder, which has a navy museum, an aquarium and a lifeboat museum, or treat the kids to some time at De Holle Bolle Boom adventure park – both are 20 minutes’ drive away. If you like a bit of classic Dutch scenery, make time to visit Hoorn (45 minutes), a lakeside town with a 17th-century centre, and take a trip to Alkmaar (25 minutes) to explore the cheese market and see the Dutch Cheese Museum.
