General

  • Beachfront camp next to a nature reserve in the famed Bulb Region
  • Close to Alkmaar and its popular cheese markets, museums and galleries
  • Pirate ship playground, games room, bike rental and watersports

What an utterly gorgeous – and peaceful – place this is at which to blossom. Long days among North Holland shoreline, woodland, lakes, dunes and tulip fields are all within easy reach of family-friendly Camping Corfwater, near the village of Petten in the country's famed bulb region.

You could, for example, hire a bike on site for serene springtime rides past the blazing colour of the area's tulip fields… or amble down to the beaut beach, 100 metres away, for peaceful (or active) days in the water or on the sands. Or if you fancy some wildlife watching, the site is adjacent to the huge 580-hectare nature reserve of Het Zwanenwater and its 70+ species of bird.

Camping Corfwater is surrounded by woodland, with kilometres of cycle paths passing the tulip fields and the nearby lakes, marshes, ponds and dunes of Het Zwanenwater. As it's a family site, stuff is set up well for tiddlers, who have a ship playground to swashbuckle around at, sandboxes to dig in, and a games room with table tennis, table football and a dartboard where they can try their luck (or watch a film if they're not feeling competitive).

Kids have their own – mighty cute – bathroom facilities too, part of a well-maintained set of amenities on site that also include showers and toilets for the grownups, a launderette and a roomy washing-up area.

Good size pitches which were level and well oriented to provide maximum space. The washrooms were large, well equipped and very clean. Staff were extremely helpful, providing site and local information. Easy access to the town, beach and to the extensive cycle network. While the site was pretty full, it did not feel busy.

We thoroughly enjoyed our two week stay at Camping Corfwater.
    Location right next to beach
    Stunning beach and scenery
Bike hire and fantastic cycle path network
Beautifully clean and well appointed facilities and plenty of them
Nice pitches on different fields and levels so not all regimented
Fresh pastries and bread available at camp shop each day (and coffee)
Spar shop in Petten 5 min walk (great selection of fresh foods and cakes)
Great location for visiting other beaches, towns.
Restaurants/cafes in Petten as well as a beach restaurant.

    Disliked:

It’s a small thing, but I’d specifically checked the website before our holiday to see if there were laundry facilities on site - I couldn’t find any info so assumed not. Actually there’s a laundry room with 2 washers and 2 dryers plus numerous hand washing sinks. We could have packed fewer clothes if we’d known! 😉

Washing / toilets / showering facilities superb.

    Disliked:

Arrival was dreadful. The young lady at reception has had no hospitality training. Rude, unwelcoming and if I could have got my money back immediately I would have left. ( I will be looking into how to get a refund before booking again with Pitch Up so if this happens again I can drive away ) . The site is a massive motorhome / caravan park - read into this what you want . Nothing nice about it in my opinion. I initially didn’t want to be there but loved cycling around the area and I didn’t have to see the staff again until we left. On leaving Miss ‘No Manners ‘ asked me if I had had a good time at the site. I had to stop myself from addressing the above issue. I replied ‘Fine’ and left.

Proximity to a beautiful beach, good bus link to Alkmaar from where you can get the train direct to Amsterdam Central.
Restaurant and bar on the beach offered good food coupled with good service, but was very busy at times.

    Disliked:

The gate to the village being closed at 8pm and then not opened until 10am the following morning. Surely this should be the other way round, as you had to walk all the way round to get to the village, so it took 15 minutes rather than 5 minutes.

Local attractions

A supermarket, tennis club and several restaurants are at at Corfwater's nearest village of Petten, less than 15 minutes' walk away. Activities and walks for all ages start from the outdoor centre; for watersports, a centre is close to the site at the nearby beach.

Many visitors sensibly explore the area on two wheels, especially during April and May when the bulb region's famed tulips and hyacinths are in bloom; pedalling at your leisure around the tulip-lined cycle paths and along the quiet riverbanks of the area is one of the most splendid things to do in the region.

About 25 minutes' drive away, pick up (lots of) souvenirs and take lots of pics at the famed summer cheese market of Alkmaar, one of the country's best-known tourist destinations. The city is well worth a look at any time of year, for its handsome medieval buildings including the tall tower of the Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk, and for its several museums, with one each dedicated to cheese, beer and the Beatles.
