- Quiet farm site with meadow views at Hensbroek in North Holland
- De Museummolen 10 minutes’ drive; Alkmaar cheese market 20 minutes
- Trampoline and games field; shops and restaurants 10 minutes’ drive
In the case of Minicamping De Rozenbottel, small is most definitely best. With just a handful of pitches in a nicely level field, this is the spot for you if you’re after a small-scale experience, plenty of privacy and a generous dose of rural peace. Set on a family-run farm, the site is named after the ‘rozenbottel’ or rose hips that are cultivated on the land.
Sitting on the outskirts of the sleepy village of Hensbroek in North Holland, it’s surprisingly only 40 minutes’ drive from central Amsterdam. There’s an undoubted simple vibe about the place, and accordingly the list of facilities is short: a shower block, washing-up area and a few picnic tables in the camping field for alfresco meals. For the kids, however, there’s a trampoline and a small games field for kicking balls around.
Livestock grazes in surrounding fields, and there are plenty of scenic walks along country lanes for exercising any dogs – please keep them on a lead on the pitches. Heerhugowaard (10 minutes’ drive) has a good choice of restaurants and bars, a bowling alley, cinema and indoor pool, and you can pick up everything you need in the town’s shopping mall.

Local attractions
From the site, it’s 40 minutes’ walk to the Drie Windmolens (Three Windmills) on the Ringvaart van de Heerhugowaard; they look spectacular at sunset on a clear evening. To see the interior of a heritage windmill, take the guided tour of De Museummolen (10 minutes’ drive), which includes period rooms and the inner workings of the mill.
There’s more local history to be seen at Museum Broeker Veiling (15 minutes), where you can watch a vegetable auction and take boat trips down the Alkmaar Canal. Hoorn (25 minutes) has a historic harbour to explore, along with lots of attractive gabled buildings in its lively centre. Visit Alkmaar (20 minutes) on summer Fridays to witness the centuries-old cheese market, or make a day of it cruising the canals and checking out museums in Amsterdam (40 minutes).
Closer to base camp, you can hire kayaks and paddleboards to explore all the local waterways, and if you’re after some high-octane water-based activity, head to the coast at Strandje van Schellinkhout (25 minutes) for kitesurfing in the offshore winds.
