  • Family-friendly holiday cottages in a forested recreation area
  • Half an hour's journey to Amsterdam or Alkmaar
  • Indoor pool, petting zoo, restaurant and wellness area on site
A location within a recreation area, surrounded by forests and waterways, is a great thing all of itself, but when it’s also within easy reach of the beach, a national park and the capital city (which just happens to be one of the world’s great cities…) – well, that’s a truly splendid spot for a holiday. And that’s the exact setup of EuroParcs Spaarnwoude, surrounded by greenery in the middle of the Spaarnwoude recreation area. This North Holland holiday park is in a prime spot for relaxing – you can head straight out onto forest trails for a walk or bike ride or spend a day drifting around on the water in a canoe or small boat. A horse riding centre and golf course are a short walk away as well. And that’s not all that’s on hand… the park itself has playgrounds, a petting zoo, go-kart rental and a wellness area with an indoor pool, fitness room and infrared cabin. Each of the two-bedroom chalets has a small kitchen for sorting out meals, but there’s also a restaurant and snack bar for when you’re not in the mood to cook. All of this means that it’s probably quite tempting to spend much of your time in and around the park, but in fact it’s really worth planning some time to get out and about – a half-hour journey from here (in the car or on the bus) can get you to Alkmaar, to the beach at Bloemendaal aan Zee or into the centre of Amsterdam for a day of museums, canal cruises and excellent shops and restaurants.

Local attractions

Once you’ve had a stroll through the surrounding recreation area, head out for further walks in the Twiske-Waterland nature reserve (15 minutes’ drive) or through the dunes and forests of Zuid-Kennemerland National Park (20 minutes). Meanwhile, over in Amsterdamse Bos you can see it all from above by climbing into the trees at Klimpark Fun Forest (20 minutes). For a real taste of Dutch culture and cuisine, you’ll need to include trips to the old wooden houses, windmills and clog makers of Zaanse Schans (20 minutes) and the ‘cheese town’ of Alkmaar (half an hour) – time your visit to the latter for a Friday to see the famous cheese market in full swing. And of course there’s a huge draw nearby in the city of Amsterdam: it’s home to amazing museums like the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum, historic sights like the Anne Frank House and a whole lot of characterful corners to explore on foot, by bike or on a canal cruise. It’ll take you about half an hour to reach the city by car or public transport.
