The beach at Callantsoog is a fabulous one for all sorts of holidays – it’s several kilometres long so there’s heaps of space for swimming (in safe waters with summer lifeguards), sandcastle building, kite flying, sunbathing, kitesurfing, land yachting or simply strolling along the sands. Sound tempting? It’s all only five minutes’ drive/bike ride away from Rekreatiecentrum De Nollen, a welcoming and sustainable North Holland holiday park surrounded by lush greenery and with lots of handy facilities on site. A good place to start is at reception, where you can hire bikes, go-karts and child seats, buy launderette tokens and exchange gas bottles as well as pick up handy local info. After that, perhaps head to the park’s hub Paviljoen8 restaurant (you may like to book a spot on the terrace for special celebrations, drinks and dinner.) Themed night-time entertainment during high season includes bingo and pub quizzes. There’s a cosy coffee corner too, where you can get bean coffee, tea and freshly baked rolls in the morning, as well as snacks and ice creams throughout the day. You can also use the campsite app to order groceries at 8ToGo from the comfort of your camping chair, and pick them up the same day from reception. Fun facilities for the kids include a playground with bouncy castle, basketball and beach volleyball courts, football goals and kite-flying areas. Bram the goat is on stand by to greet youngsters, along with his rabbit friends Po, Laalaa and Tinus in the animal field. Ask at reception if you want to give them a treat.

Liked Ideally located next to gorgeous beaches. Perfect for bike rides. The campsite staff were friendly and helpful. Restaurant was cosy with decent service and food.

Disliked Reception closes at 5 which was a bit lousy, even for off season.

The beach is the main highlight of Callantsoog, but it’s also worth taking some time to stretch your legs on a stroll around the Zwanenwater and Kooibosch nature reserves – both are just a couple of minutes away by bike and a little way back from the coast. There’s a surf school in Julianadorp (10 minutes’ drive) – but if it’s chilly you may prefer the warmer waters of Campanula swimming pool (10 minutes). If you’re here at the right time of year, take a walk through the colourful Kop van Noord-Holland bulb fields (20 minutes); if not, there are tulip-themed exhibits at Land van Fluwel Avonturenparadijs (10 minutes) along with play areas, climbing walls and other fun things for the kids. Need a few more outings for the youngsters? Try the indoor and outdoor attractions as Amusement Park De Goudvis (10 minutes), meet the animals at Dierenpark Hoenderdaell (15 minutes) or head to SkagaVenture (15 minutes) for a trampoline park, laser games and go-karting.
