Small is definitely best at Camping De Tulpenweide, a relaxed and family-friendly mini-campsite set among vibrant bulb fields in the Kop van Noord-Holland – the largest flower-growing area in the Netherlands. Located between the North Sea coast and the Amstelmeer, it’s a great base for cyclists, surfers, sailors and walkers as well as tulip tourists. If you’re going down the self-catering route during your stay, pick up supplies in Breezand (five minutes’ drive). Otherwise, the central hub of this leafy, landscaped site is the Cozy House, where you can find a soft-drinks machine, buy fresh eggs kindly laid by the resident hens and order breakfast rolls or sandwiches to pick up the following morning from reception. If you’re feeling convivial, chat with fellow guests on the Cozy House terrace; if you’d rather keep yourself to yourself, find a quiet corner and dip into a book from the site library. Your youngsters will certainly be kept busy. There’s a playground with a climbing frame, trampoline and ping-pong table, as well as mini-tractors and go-karts to mess around on. During school holidays, a few organised activities are arranged for the kids too. Animal-loving guests are welcome to feed the site’s dwarf goats, rabbits and chickens, and there’s a dedicated dog-exercise park if you’re wanting to take your canine chums on holiday with you.

Liked Genau nach unserem Geschmack etwas außerhalb gelegen, die nächsten Ortschaften sind gut erreichbar mit dem Fahrrad, schön klein und persönlich und nicht so überlaufen. Geben sich viel Mühe es so angenehm wie möglich zu gestalten die Besitzer auch mit paar Aktivitäten in der Sommersaison. Der Platz war auch schön grün mit Hecken, Bäumen und der Rasen wurde auch gepflegt. Der Camping bietet mit seinen dazu buchbaren Optionen wie ein persönliches Toiletten- und Duschhäuschen oder Kühlschrank für viele Annehmlichkeiten, die nicht selbstverständlich sind. Die Campingbesitzer sind auch sehr hilfsbereit. Sie machen alles einem dem Aufenthalt so angenehm wie möglich zu gestalten.

Disliked Leider wird nicht auf die Ruhestunden geachtet bei den anderen Camping Besucher. Leider hatten wir Nachbarn wo die Kinder schon um 7:00 Uhr auf dem Camping herum gelaufen sind und lauthals geschrien haben. Aber dafür können die Besitzer leider auch nichts, wenn die Eltern der Kinder es so dulden, also wir hätten unseren Kindern dies verboten, da es sich um eine Art von Respektlosigkeit handelt den anderen Campingbesuchern gegenüber. Nicht jeder hat Kinder oder Kinder dabei.

Liked Very friendly and welcoming site. Perfect for Adults and brilliant for kids. Everything very clean and we liked the feel of the place. Laid back. Loved the burgers on Saturday night. Also a singer, who was very good.

Visit the Kop van Noord-Holland in spring to see the bulb fields as a riot of colour; you can explore them on foot, by bike or on a guided tour. If the kids are bored by bulbs, distract them by visiting Dierenpark Hoenderdaell (five minutes’ drive) to see lemurs, alpacas and big cats – or perhaps jump on the ferry to Texel from Den Helder (15 minutes) for a day of pottering around in the sand dunes, swimming in the sea and (hopefully) spotting a seal or two basking on the shoreline. Stay awhile in Den Helder itself to learn about the region’s maritime legacy at the Dutch Navy Museum, or visit Fort Kijkduin, built in the Napoleonic era. For more submersion in Dutch culture, visit the colourful cheese market in Alkmaar (35 minutes); showcasing vast yellow rounds of Gouda cheese, it takes place every Friday morning in the Waagplein. A celebration of West Frisian folklore takes place in Schagen (20 minutes) on summer Thursdays, when historic carriages are paraded through the streets by residents wearing traditional costumes and wooden clogs.
