It’s a petite place indeed at little Minicamping De Keuterij, and a peaceful one too, in the grounds of a North Brabant farmhouse five minutes’ drive from the village of Sint Hubert.
Country life starts on arrival at this rural site: the tree-lined driveway that leads from the site entrance to the pitches behind the house passes animal pastures full of pigs, goats, chickens and sheep that guests can meet later on, and there’s lots of green space by pitches where kids can run about (or grownups, if they’re so inspired…).
The playground and sandpit should be a nice distraction on days when mum and dad are too tired to move; a ping pong table and soccer field are on hand for those with a competitive streak too. In need of something less active? There are plenty of shaded spots around the site where one can settle in with a book (or take a sneaky nap), and picnic tables are dotted about for outdoorsy eats. Fresh eggs are available for sale every day.
When the time comes to venture off site, guests may possibly have a tough time deciding where to start. Budding zoologists may be keen to visit the two zoos within 20 minutes' drive, while urbanites might prefer to wander around ’s-Hertogenbosch or Eindhoven (both within 45 minutes). The German border’s only about a 10-minute drive away too, for intrepid multi-country travellers, or those who just fancy ordering coffee in a different language.

Small folk (and bigger ones) fascinated by animals will be busy around these parts: critter-spotting nearby can be had at Dierenpark Zie-ZOO (15 minutes’ drive) and/or ZooParc Overloon (20 minutes), or a little further afield at Zoo Veldhoven (45 minutes) or the African-themed safari park Beekse Bergen (50 minutes).
For those that favour fairytales, the fantasy-inspired Efteling theme park is 50 minutes away, and there are real-life castles where you can stage your own take on the tales: take your pick from scenic moated Heeswijk Castle (half an hour) or the classic turrets of Helmond Castle (40 minutes).
If you’re sticking to rural days out, try out the lake and waterpark at Billy Bird Park Hemelrijk (15 minutes) or take a walk in Maasheggen nature reserve (20 minutes). Or, if you’re after a bit of a change of scenery, try out mini city breaks in Nijmegen (20 minutes) and arty ’s-Hertogenbosch (40 minutes) or wandering around the Phillips Museum in Eindhoven (45 minutes).
