  • Museum Klok and Peel 10 minutes’ drive; Eindhoven half an hour
  • Landscaped pitches 15 minutes’ cycle from De Groote Peel National Park
On the borders of North Brabant and Limburg, Camping de Peelpoort is a relaxed, spacious and family-friendly campsite adjacent to forested countryside. It’s also an easy 15 minutes’ cycle from De Groote Peel National Park, an ancient nature reserve of heathlands, forests and sand ridges – just the spot for anyone wanting to get back to nature and spend their holiday walking or cycling. This prettily landscaped site offers up grass pitches sheltered by trees and separated by neat shrubberies. You’ll soon feel nice and relaxed in the peaceful surroundings, where you can join the kids for games of mini golf, play tightly contested games of pétanque or go fishing on neighbouring De Witte Bergen pond. As far as practical facilities go, guests are well-catered for with electricity, power points and drinking water, a modern amenities block and a laundry service. Anything else you need, just head for reception, where welcoming staff members – showing typical Brabant friendliness – can answer any queries about the campsite. They’ll also help with tourist information, and give details of walking and cycling routes in the De Groote Peel wetlands.

Local attractions

First stop for lovers of outdoor exercise should be De Groote Peel National Park (15 minutes by bike) for its numerous boardwalk trails through marshland and heath. Birdwatchers, be sure to bring your binoculars as the nature reserve has one of the largest bird populations in Western Europe; you might get to see cranes, yellowhammers and grebes. If you’d prefer to take your exercise on the golf course, the 18-hole Golfbaan het Woold (10 minutes’ walk) is laid out on sandy soil amid forest, dunes and wetlands, and novices can practise their swing on the driving range. Get genned up on the history of the Brabant region at the Museum Klok and Peel (10 minutes’ drive), which has a collection of carillons and astronomical clocks as well as dioramas showcasing prehistoric animals. There are more family-friendly museums in Eindhoven (half an hour): the Van Abbemuseum has a quirky collection of alfresco sculpture, while the DAF Museum provides a colourful romp through the history of the DAF car.
