  • Canadian-themed holidays in De Maasduinen National Park
  • Indoor and outdoor pools, paddling pool, playground and animal farm
  • Milkshakes, snacks and takeaway meals all available
A little bit of Canada in the Netherlands, eh? With pools, a farm and fishing (not to mention milkshakes and ice cream)? All hail Camping Klein Canada, a Limburg site with a Canadian theme, heaps of facilities and a setting of cycling and hiking trails, forests and fens in De Maasduinen National Park. (And if you want Germany as well as Canada, Dusseldorf and Cologne are both within an hour's drive from here.) Rather unlike Canada, dips can be had here regardless of weather: the site has an indoor pool as well as an outdoor one with slides, and a separate paddling pool with slide for the tiddlers. Other facilities for all ages include a playground with climbing frames, bouncy castle and outdoor toys; a small farm; a tennis court, and a pond for fishing (you may have heard that this is also a somewhat popular Canadian sport…). Canadian-themed eats, drinks and shopping are sorted at the Cafeteria Quebec, serving quick bites, takeaway meals, milkshakes and ice cream; Grand Café Ontario, with snacks and drinks, and the Manitoba shop, selling food as well as camping equipment and souvenirs. The team arranges activities, tournaments and events in the summer months, including bingo in the Grand Café.

Local attractions

Bike rides aren't too far from your Canadian-themed base: this the Netherlands after all… The site is set in De Maasduinen National Park, crisscrossed by cycling and mountain biking as well as hiking trails around its varied terrain of forest, sand dunes, woodland and the longest stretch of river dunes in the country. If you're more of a nature spotter or birdwatcher, peer from the park hides to try and see critters including badgers, foxes, snakes and over 100 species of birds. (Courtesy of the local farmers, you should also see sheep, goats and Scottish Galloway cattle.) Across the border into Germany, Cologne and Dusseldorf are about an hour's drive away. If you're having a German day or two, also make time for Kevelaer, the most-visited Catholic pilgrimage site in north-western Europe, and historic Xanten, home of a medieval town centre, many watersports lakes and the Archaeological Park, one of the biggest archaeological open-air museums in the world. Shopping? Till ringing – and nightlife – can be had at Limburg, Maastricht and Venlo; there's also an outlet shopping centre in Roermond. Family days? Visit Toverland, BillyBird Park Hemelrijk or Wunderland Kalkar.
