  • In the UNESCO-protected Wadden Sea area just off the Ems river
  • A five-minute walk from Termunterzijl’s harbour and canoe rentals
  • Playgrounds, kids’ entertainment, football pitch, snack bar and wifi
With a seal-covered dyke as the backdrop to beach days at Camping Zeestrand Eems-Dollard in the historic harbour village of Termunterzijl, a trip here isn’t quite the same as your usual waterside hol… But that’s what makes a stay on this scenic stretch of the Ems river in the UNESCO-protected Wadden Sea area of Groningen so compelling – especially when you add the fact that it’s a top spot for walking, boating, fishing and cycling breaks in the Netherlands into the equation. Also within dawdling distance of the site is canoe rental (five minutes) for getting out on the water and the nearby viewing wall next to the dyke is a stellar spot for a close-up look at the seals and their young. Your own nippers can frolic back at the park in the playgrounds, on the football pitch or during activities organised by the entertainment team. When they’re hungry, a snack bar’s in the grounds serving up coffee, baked goods, light meals, ice cream and alcohol drinks; it's also where to rent a barbecue if you’re planning to rustle up your own meals. Rather have someone else cook? Seafood restaurants are minutes away on foot in the village, and if you've overindulged, the local beach has a marked area for swimming off the extra calories. It’s also a popular place for surfing, sailing and kitesurfing – grand if you really need to get moving.
