Surveying the sunset at IJsselmeer lake, kitesurfing on the water and strolling on soft sands – it’s all possible from Camping Sudersé, a spacious site 15 minutes’ walk from Workum beach and just outside the town of the same name, just outside the Friesland Lakes region. This is a splendid area for sunbathing, swimming and fishing as well – in fact, there’s all manner of water-based activities to flit between when you’re not settling in at the lush green site. And when you are indeed settling in on site? The kids can take on the playground's sandpit and trampoline (perhaps handy as entertainment while the grownups unpack food from Workum's supermarkets to stash in the park's shared freezer). A small supply of groceries is on offer at reception too, along with reams of leaflets on the area’s ace attractions – pick up a few to peruse as you feast on freshly baked pastries (sold here every morning). Armed with tourist pamphlets and ready to explore? Ride past the Frisian mudflats on a bike, take a day trip to one of the Wadden Islands offshore, or walk through the Gaasterlandse forests; you could also hire a boat to see the scenery from a different angle. Camping Sudersé has modern bathrooms facilities, free wifi, recycling amenities and a laundry area. Pets are welcome but must be kept on a lead.

Liked Wir hatten eine mega Woche auf diesem Campingplatz, es war alles da was das Herz begehrt, die duschen und Toiletten waren sauber, wir hat strom und WLAN, die Betreiber sind super freundlich, es gab etliche Spielmöglichkeiten für Kinder, das Wetter war mega, bis zum Strand waren es 1.500 Meter, also gut zu Fuß zu erreichen. Es fuhr aber auch jede Stunde ein kleiner Zug zum Strand. Wir würden jederzeit wieder zu diesem Campingplatz fahren. Wir hatten wirklich eine tolle Zeit. Das tollste für die Kids war Kater Bruno der jeden Tag in unserem Zelt schlafen durfte

Local attractions

You won’t be short of things to do on a trip to Workum. In town, visit the Jopie Huisman Museum, home of the self-taught realist painter’s art, as well as the Kunsthuis Kort gallery and a series of 18th-century houses. The old shipping yard, fishermen’s homes and pottery displays are worth peering at too. If it's adrenaline-spiking activities you're after, amble to the lake (15 minutes’ walk) for kitesurfing schools staffed by trained instructors ready to help you whizz across the water at the wind’s behest; gentler aquatic sports come in the form of paddleboarding and sailing, with rental of crafts available beside the banks as well. The Frisian Lakes area is made up of 24 lakes; locals flock to this central and south-western section of the province for the Sneekweek boating event in Sneek (half an hour’s drive), the biggest town in the area. It's certainly worth a look if you happen to be here in summer. Another town to take in is Lemmer (30 minutes) for the UNESCO-registered D.F. Wouda Steam Pumping Station – the world’s biggest steam-powered pumping station still in operation. Once you’ve set eyes on this supersized structure, the centre of the urban area is worth a wander, especially if you sign up for a walking tour.
