  • Family-friendly Friesland site a five-minute drive from Joure
  • Tjeukemeer lake five minutes’ drive; De Deelen reserve 25 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; reading room and kids' swings on site
Whether you’re into cycling, watersports or just loafing on a lake shore, chances are you can indulge in a spot of what you fancy at Jantina Hoeve, a family- and dog-friendly site on the outskirts of Ouwsterhaule village, a five-minute drive from the town of Joure, in the south-western corner of the Dutch province of Friesland. The big attraction here is Tjeukemeer lake (a half-hour walk away, or five minutes’ drive, if you’re travelling with heavy watersports gear), where you can relax and swim at beaches like De Ulesprong, with its grassy and decked areas, or have a go at paddleboarding or canoeing. Meanwhile, keen anglers can head for the Scharsterrijn, a wide canal with excellent fishing spots. Alongside the canal, a flat cycling path takes you to Langwarder Wielen, a popular lake for sailing. And, of course, there are plenty of cycling or hiking paths in this area of reclaimed peatlands. Walkers can visit Haulsterbossen, 35 minutes' walk away. Alternatively, you can drive to nature reserves such as De Deelen (25 minutes), its wetlands a birdwatcher’s paradise, with geese, herons and marsh harriers flying overhead, or De Weerribben-Wieden National Park (40 minutes), a boggy landscape with wild orchids, butterflies and otters. Back at the site after a day of exploring the Frisian countryside and its watery attractions, you can freshen up with a hot-water shower or learn about the local area in the reading room while the kids run around the site or play on the swings. In addition to a fridge, there's also a laundry area with a washing machine and a tumble dryer (please note: these appliances can be used on request).

Local attractions

The town of Heerenveen (20 minutes’ drive) is known for the modern and contemporary art exhibitions at the Museum Belvédère, in a striking dark basalt building straddling the Prinsenwijk canal. You can book a guided tour of the gallery or a walk through the nearby Oranjewoud Estate, with its landscaped park. The IJsselmeer coast (half an hour) is dotted with attractions such as the Wouda steam pumping station, on the outskirts of Lemmer; Sybrandy’s Speelpark, with rides aimed at children under 13 years of age; and Vogelkijkhut Sondeler Leien, where you can spot marsh harriers and reed birds. Hiking and walking trails at De Alde Feanen National Park (35 minutes) take you through swampy areas, reed beds and grasslands, or you might decide to explore the area from the water, on a canoe or paddleboard. Whatever you choose, keep your eyes peeled for deer, cormorants and stork, plus the occasional eagle.
