What a fabulous Friesland location – Recreatiepark De Bosrand is a peaceful park in the Gaasterland area, on the edge of a forest and 2.5 kilometres from the shoreline of the IJsselmeer. This site, about five minutes’ drive/cycle from Oudemirdum, makes an excellent base for a holiday spent touring this area, taking in the lakes, canals and other lovely landscapes. Cycling is often the best way to get around, and that’s made even easier with bike hire available on site. Golf, horse riding, paddleboarding and boating are also available nearby, and there are plenty of historic and family attractions around to fill your days with, too – Sybrandy's Speelpark is a favourite with the kids, and you can easily visit nearby towns like Sneek, Joure and Sloten. Life on site is fairly simple – this is a place designed for relaxation rather than somewhere with lots of lively entertainments. Facilities include toilets, showers, wifi, a washing-up area, a chemical disposal point and a launderette. Oudemirdum is a small town but it's big enough to host a small supermarket and a couple of restaurants. Dogs are welcome on site.

Liked Sauberer Platz, große Stellplätze.

Disliked Die Duschen sind eine Katastrophe. Das Wasser spritzt überall hin, die Klamotten bleiben hinter dem winzigen Schutz nass, man selbst kämpft damit den Schaum aus den Haaren zu bekommen (verschiedene Duschen gestestet). Die Temperatur kann man nicht selbst einstellen.
Warmwasser, egal ob für die Duschen oder zum Abwaschen muss extra bezahlt werden, geht nur mit einer Karte und ist sehr teuer, das Guthaben läuft schnell runter, sogar, wenn man das Wasser beim Abwaschen aus macht, da muss man immer die Karte herausnehmen zwischendurch.

Der Schwimmteich ist lediglich ein Tümpel der so gar nicht zum Baden einlädt.

Der Stromverbrauch wird separat abgerechnet und ist extrem teuer. Habe für eine Woche (Strom für die Kühlbox, ein wenig Licht und Handy laden) mehr bezahlt als für eine Woche der Strom für einen kompletten Haushalt kostet. Es war auch nicht möglich die Stromabrechnung zu prüfen.
Die Höhe der Stromkosten sollte im Vorfeld klarer kommuniziert werden, zudem wäre dann eine Zählerstandeinsicht gut, um das auch prüfen und im Blick behalten zu können. So war es einfach eine Frechheit.

Ruhe hat man hier auch eher weniger, einige Zeltnachbarn meinen auf maximale Lautstärke ihre Handyspiele/-Videos laufen lassen zu müssen oder den halben Tag mit Lautsprecher telefonieren zu müssen, damit auch alle etwas davon haben. Da wäre mir Kinderlärm lieber gewesen. Aber für diesen Punkt keinen Abzug, für die Zeltnachbarn kann der Platz ja nichts.

Local attractions

Being so close to the IJsselmeer, it has to be a trip to the coast first surely. Start with the 15-minute cycle to 't Mirnser Klif beach, coming back via the Luchtwachttoren observation tower for sweeping views over the sea and the rest of the landscape. For active seaside days, sign up for windsurfing or kitesurfing lessons at KBC Holland (10 minutes’ drive). Elsewhere around the local area you could take the kids for a fun day out at Sybrandy's Speelpark (five minutes’ drive/10 minutes’ cycle), play a round at Golfclub Gaasterland (five minutes’ drive) or see some classic Dutch design at De Jager windmill (15 minutes). As for the local towns, there are several worth visiting. Joure (half an hour) has a puzzle museum and the Swimfun aquapark, while Sloten (15 minutes) and Sneek (half an hour) – two of Friesland’s ’Eleven Cities’ – are packed with historic buildings and attractions. Traffic-free Giethoorn (45 minutes) is a lovely place for a quiet walk alongside the canals or a boat trip (either taking a cruise or hiring your own craft).
