  • Peaceful eco-minded site in pretty Friesland countryside
  • A 15-minute drive from Dokkum; 30 minutes from Groningen, Leeuwarden
  • Restaurant, petting zoo, horse and carriage rides, and fishing on site
In needs of quiet hols where kids and grownups are equally entertained? Make your way to Camping Bos en Pingo, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the centre of Friesland village Kollum and 15 minutes from Dokkum. The tree-filled meadows of the site offer up plenty that’ll appeal to kids, from a small petting zoo (site owner Gerard is a sheep shearer) to horse and carriage rides. Grownups (and patient kids) can opt instead to spend days on the banks of the lake – formed when the Ice Age ended – casting out lines and hoping for lucky catches. If gazing at the lake is creating a craving for cooling dips, a 20-minute walk (or five-minute drive) brings guests to an outdoor pool. More interested in exploring than in leisurely dips? It’s 20 minutes’ drive to Lauwersmeer National Park and 30 minutes to De Alde Feanen National Park, both of which have plenty of hikes and bikes. Of course, days spent on site won’t be wasted – it’s set up with a green ethos in mind, and guests are encouraged to think of the leafy green spaces and the animals in the petting zoo with nature in mind, all of which makes for soothing stays. The site itself is quite pretty, too, with a restored farmhouse housing a cosy restaurant and bar.

Local attractions

Budding zoologists will have lots to entice hereabouts: appetites whetted by the small petting zoo on site should be satisfied by trips to the goats, rabbits, camels and parrots at SanjesZoo Veenwouden 15 minutes’ drive away, days among penguins and polar bears at AquaZoo Friesland and reptiles at DoeZoo Insektenwereld (both within 25 minutes), and hours with the rehabbing seals in the Pieterburen centre 35 minutes from base. Sticking with nature is simple here too. The towns of Holwerd and Lauwersoog are both about 25 minutes from the site and are the departure points for ferries to the Wadden Islands of Ameland and Schiermonnikoog, respectively. The former has a maritime centre, museum, lighthouse and watersports-haven beach, while the latter is the smallest populated island in the Wadden, a national park, and known for its honey and cheese. All too pastoral? Blow off some steam with a trip to the Bullet Factory paintball centre, less than five minutes from base, or opt instead for a jaunt to one of the nearby cities. It’s about 30 minutes from the site to Groningen and Leeuwarden, and both are must-visits – the former for its carriage museum, châteaux and art, and the latter for its brewing history and casino. If all of this is becoming too earthly, head along to Eise Eisinga Planetarium, 45 minutes away, to turn eyes to the stars…

Liked: Web site made it sound great but sadly not our experience.

Disliked: When we arrived at site no one was about. Handwritten board of prices which went upto 40€ per night! It all looked very neglected and overgrown. Branches hanging over motorhome as trying to drive along the roadway. Only one caravan could be seen which looked like it had been there some time but again no one around. What looked like a toilet block looked ancient and not fit for purpose. Just about managed to turn round on big concrete slab and left. Felt unsafe and certainly did not wish to stay. Maybe we did not go far enough down the track but there were no signs and all overgrown worried of damage to motorhome and getting stuck. Would not recommend.
