- Peaceful site adjacent to the Mantingerveld nature reserve in Drenthe
- Dwingelderveld National Park and Ellert en Brammert 20 minutes’ drive
- Bicycle sheds, pétanque pitch and books on site; local products to buy
Wake up, click your bicycle into the right gear and cycle directly out into a nature reserve. That could be your daily routine at the Drenthe site of Camping Landgoed Geuzenbos. It has a rather convenient (and peaceful) location directly adjacent to the Mantingerveld nature reserve, where cycling and walking trails weave through the juniper forest, heathland and sand dunes.
Aside from the obvious nature reserve, the local area also has plenty to see, from small villages and megalithic burial mounds to the national parks and open-air museums that are within 20 minutes’ drive. But before you set your sights on the attractions of Drenthe, you will probably want to make your acquaintance with the on-site facilities…
Cyclists have been paid special attention here, with covered bicycle sheds. Your free time could be spent flicking through the titles on the site's well-stocked bookcase before settling in the log cabin with your chosen book, or perhaps challenging someone to a game of pétanque.
The nearest supermarket is only a 15-minute drive away, but there are some things you may want to leave off your shopping list. Warm rolls are up for grabs every day on site, with fresh eggs from the chickens and honey from the site’s own forest often joining their ranks.
Toilets, coinless showers and a washing-up area join the line-up of facilities at Camping Landgoed Geuzenbos, alongside service points for chemical toilets and grey water waste. The spacious pitches all have water and electric hook-up points.

Local attractions
How do you like the idea of kicking off your trip with some local history? There are two places that’ll get you off to a good start. Car-free Museum Orvelte (15 minutes’ drive) has old farm buildings with thatched roofs, cobbled streets and a museum with old toy trucks. That’ll lead you nicely onto Ellert en Brammert (20 minutes), an open-air museum with a toll house, school, prison and old Saxon farmhouse from the times when peat digging was a thriving industry in these parts.
Some time at a national park, next? Take your pick from Dwingelderveld National Park (20 minutes), where there’s cotton grass, stonechat, curlew and heather, and Drents-Friese Wold National Park's (25 minutes) big forests and sandrifts.
A couple of other spots are worth jotting down for future reference. Diever (25 minutes) has an outdoor theatre, open since 1946, which runs summer Shakespeare plays set in the forest. Golfers might also like to spend a day at the local golf course (10 minutes), a pretty one with water features that has been open since 1991.
