Spacious and peaceful pitches next to a forest, with direct access to bike and walking paths to the moorland and sand dunes that lie beyond – sounds like a pretty fab spot for a relaxing break, yes? This is the serene setting of Camping Tikvah, a rural site in the Drenthe highlands and next door to the the Grote Zand nature reserve. Peaceful it may feel, but remote it is not – a five-minute bike ride takes you to the village of Hooghalen for a supermarket, bakery and cafés, and the bigger city of Assen is 10 kilometres away. How you choose to make the most of this setting is up to you: wander or pedal along the paths that lead directly out to the nature reserve or select a spot right there on site to put your feet up, pour a glass of something and gaze over at the forest views that surround the place. Should you have brought along kids who are less than keen on all this chillout time, there’s heaps of space here for them to play games and busy themselves bouncing on the trampoline, roaming around on go-karts or playing with the table tennis, table football and toys in the games room (excellent news on inclement days). There’s also excellent wifi if they (or you) are somewhat wedded to their gadgets. Also on site is a clean, modern bathroom block with ladies’ and gents’ showers and an accessible shower for less mobile guests or those who need extra space to hose down wriggly toddlers.

Liked Location, toilet and showers very clean.

Disliked It rained all days we were there and the ground got very soft. Toilet and shower er clean but cold as doors left open. Close to many sites.

Liked Really lovely campsite, staff were so friendly and helpful. Facilities were clean. Took us 15mins to walk to tram stop, then onto Central Station. Really easy.

Liked Tidy campsite, clean facilities.

Disliked Stupid shower pre-payment card that you have to load with euros at reception and pay a 5 Euro deposit, then went to claim my refundable deposit back from reception when checking out, and I couldn't because the reception was closed I had to post the card through the house letter box next door the campsite owes me money for the deposit for the card.

Liked A very peaceful location. Well maintained and had a play area for children. Electric hookup ideally located next to pitch with water. Very clean shower/toilets. The lady in reception (owners daughter maybe) made us feel very welcome. A pub and supermarket just down the road. Maybe a five minute bike ride.

Local attractions

Filling your lungs with fresh air is a cinch here: walking and bike paths lead directly from the site out into the forest, sand dunes and nature reserve next door. Pedal through the woods for half an hour and you’ll be rewarded with a dip in the Iberenplas, a sandy beach in the forest with safe, clean swimming water. A 10-minute walk from the site is the remembrance centre of Westerbork, a World War II transit camp. Survivors’ stories are brought to life here with personal possessions and photos, and there’s a family-friendly educational trail running for three kilometres through the woods. Other days out within half an hour’s drive might include eyeing up the animals at Wildlands Adventure Zoo in Emmen, wandering round the prehistoric dolmen in Borger, or looking up to the stars at Planetron in Dwingeloo.

Admission

All guests spending the night at the park must present their ID at the reception desk and sign registration forms.

Arrivals and departures

Late arrivals must notify the park as soon as possible. Your booking will be held for 24 hours. After this period the management reserves the right to relet your unit.
No refunds/discounts for inclement weather, late arrivals or early departures.
Units will be allocated on arrival.

Dogs

Dogs must be kept on leads and supervised at all times.

Extras

Facilities/activities including shower are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.
