  • Spacious site set amid leafy countryside for walks and bike rides
  • Five minutes’ drive to TT Circuit Assen and Baggelhuizerplas beaches
  • Football pitch and wifi; 10 minutes’ drive from the centre of Assen
Ambling around Assen is always an ace way to spend a hol, especially when you’re staying over at Camping Graswijk, a 10-minute drive away from the summer festivals, exhibitions, open-air theatre shows and flea markets in this swish city. Events really aren’t in short supply in this area with the famed TT Circuit Assen (less than five minutes by car) hosting activities and bouts practically every weekend. More into scenic strolls and cycle rides than watching motorbike racing? Potter off on paths around the Drenthe countryside – there are plenty near the park. There’s also ample space on site for spending time in the open air. Set up a gas barbecue while the nippers rush about under your watchful eye or take them to the football field for a kickabout. If you’re in a big group, the site can make your meals (just check in advance); for breakfast ask about sourcing fresh eggs from the nearby farms. Once you’ve had your morning meal head off on tours of the region, whether to the beaches and forest around Baggelhuizerplas lake (five minutes), the war memorial at Herinneringscentrum Kamp Westerbork (15 minutes) or the open-air historical village of Orvelte (20 minutes).

Local attractions

If the sun’s out, make your way to the lake at Baggelhuizerplas (five minutes’ drive) for swims in the water, sunbathing sessions on the beaches and walks in the nearby forest. Activities are organised here year-round: look out for events including volleyball tournaments, ghost-hunting tours and music festivals. For more dips, the subtropical De Bonte Wever aqua centre (five minutes) is a top space for diving into the wave pool, floating on the wild water creek or swooshing down the slides. Relaxation’s also sorted with whirlpools, saunas and herbal baths galore. Seeking activities that are more historically inclined? Head to Orvelte to see what life was like for Saxon farmers centuries ago in an open-air museum giving a taste of another era through themed days, folk groups, special markets and theatrical performances. Another destination delving into the past is the Herinneringscentrum Kamp Westerbork (15 minutes), an old WWII Nazi transit camp transformed into a memorial centre. Visit this vitally important spot to learn out about the systematic persecution of Jewish people during a dark period for the Netherlands. To school yourself some more on the area, don’t miss the Drents Museum in Assen, a 4,600-square-metre space displaying archaeological artefacts as well as art from 1885 to 1935. The wing designed by Erick van Egeraat’s particularly impressive if you’re an architecture aficionado.
