  • Family-friendly site under five minutes' drive from the German border
  • Haven for cyclists in the Achterhoek region of the Netherlands
  • Walkers' paradise close to several long-distance walking routes
Park up for your hols at Camping De Harmienehoeve... then throw away the car keys: you won't need them at this family-friendly and dog-friendly site 20 minutes’ drive from the town of Winterswijk in the Gelderland region of the East Netherlands. De Harmienehoeve is in the Achterhoek, a superbly bike-friendly area, so this is a top spot for cycling adventures – the area is crisscrossed with biking routes and regularly placed ‘nodes’ will make sure you don’t get lost. Ramblers are well served too: the site is close to the Pieterpad, Noaberpad and Klompenpad long-distance walking routes. The site is less than five minutes' drive from Germany, so is also well placed for excursions there, starting with the border-straddling Burlo-Vardingholter Venn and Entenschlatt nature reserve. Relax back on site afterwards: go game-set-match on the tennis court, cool off in the pool, then settle down in the bar. Barbecues are welcome on site, so fire yours up and pile it high with goodies from the supermarket 15 minutes’ drive (or a 20-minute cycle) away. If you’d prefer someone else to look after the cooking, plenty of restaurants are within 20 minutes' drive.

Local attractions

Need a break from Camping De Harmienehoeve’s country living? Fret not, you’re not too far from the urban – the village of Aalten and the town of Winterswijk are both within 20 minutes’ drive of the site, and there’s plenty to lure you to either. Winterswijk was home to renowned artist Piet Mondriaan and you can explore his childhood home (and some of his artwork) at the Villa Mondriaan museum. Art not your thing? Make tracks at go-karting instead, or travel just outside town for a tasting at Vineyard Hesselink or to wander around Rosenhaege Living Gardens. In Aalten, visit the Nationaal Onderduikmuseum to learn the stories of people who went into hiding during World War II. If that's proving too dark for the kids, take them to the Kinderboerderij de Ahof petting zoo, or venture a little further for Megapret amusement park. If you're lucky enough to be in a position to take slightly longer car journeys, the stunning Middachten Castle and Veluwezoom National Park are scenic musts for some peace and quiet. Run out of things to do? Nip over to Germany to explore the city of Bocholt (visit the textile work museum, the city museum and the stunning town hall), or bring the kids to Bahia Erlebnisbad indoor waterpark.
