Located around a private lake near rural Lochem in Gelderland, Vakantiepark De Achterhoek is the smart choice for active families looking to enjoy a glamping holiday surrounded by peaceful forested countryside. And the fun starts the moment you arrive, thanks to the accommodation being in natty little lodges with pretty much every mod con provided. With cosy woodburners for chillier days, the lodges are crafted from sustainable woods and are simple and stylish inside. A clever layout allows separate dining, living and sleeping spaces, and the kitchens have all you need to prepare family meals. A sheltered decking area is out front, making an ideal gathering spot for family meals. Talking of which, stock up on essentials at the mini-market by reception, and if you don’t fancy cooking, do a raid on Taste and More café for treats like fries, burgers and ice cream – and (even better) there’s also a licensed bar. But what of those activities? There’s a soft sandy beach on the lakeshore, with wooden climbing apparatus for the kids – and if it’s not quite warm enough for a dip in the lake, head for the heated indoor pool, where there’s water-polo facilities and a toddler pool – there’s an indoor play area too if the weather is on the turn. Keep younger kids occupied with mermaid swimming sessions and outdoor film showings at the Beau and Bloem club, and challenge older kids to rounds of mini-golf or serious battles on the tennis courts. And of course you can rent bikes to explore the countryside around Lochem.

Local attractions

Take a cooling swim in the lake on sunny days, or set up with rod and bait at one of the lakeside fishing spots. Out and about, explore rural De Achterhoek by boat on the Berkel river, which runs through Lochem (10 minutes’ drive), or set off on a family bike ride through flat, wooded landscape to follow the 34-kilometre Eight Castle Route to landmarks like moated Kasteel Ampsen (25 minutes by bike). There’s masses in store for children locally too. Spend a day on rollercoasters and water rides at AdventurePark Hellendoorn, or meet the free-roaming monkeys at Apenheul in Apeldoorn (both 40 minutes). Have they still got energy to burn off? Wear them out on the zip wires at Treetop Climbing Achterhoek (15 minutes). For a change of scenery, why not head for the bright lights? The Hanseatic cities of Deventer (half an hour) and Zutphen (15 minutes) both offer lively cafés in cobbled streets or canal-side, while in Bronckhorst (25 minutes), one of the smallest city in The Netherlands, you can have a nose around quiet lanes lined with distinctive brick-built houses.
