  • Safari tent stays at a park with a petting zoo and horse riding
  • Hulshorst town and Hulshorsterzand dunes around a five-minute drive
  • Bike and go-kart hire, play area, restaurant, snack bar and trampoline
Venture to the Veluwe and give your trip a swanky spin by settling in at a safari tent: Campingpark De Vuurkuil has sleek accommodation that's just as easy on the eye as the nearby forest-covered hills and scenic sand dunes in this pretty part of the Netherlands. A peaceful place in Gelderland province, the park is surrounded by greenery and kept clean thanks to the daily maintenance service. It’s ace for animal aficionados as the grounds are home to various types of chickens, a couple of goats and a rooster. Stabling horses is also possible and dogs are permitted, plus lighting up a campfire and a barbecue is allowed. A restaurant and snack bar are on base as well – fab if you’re too hungry to wait for grub to grill – and a bread delivery service will whisk baked goods to your door around breakfast time. So that’s food figured out, but what about activities? Sports fields, table tennis and boules are on hand for folk who can’t sit still, plus bikes are available to rent. Not into pedalling? Rev around on a go-kart hired from the site instead. The park will also organise horse riding straight from the grounds for equestrians (or wannabe equestrians), and nippers have a playground and trampoline to clamber across. Tech-savvy tiddlers will also be chuffed to know the site has free wifi.

Local attractions

Along with being home to Europe’s biggest sand drifts, the Veluwe has a variety of scenery to stroll among, including woodland and heaths. Get out and explore, whether on foot, horse or bike – plenty of cycling trails are close to the park if you’re up for giving one of the Netherlands' fave pastimes a go. One place prime for pottering is the Hulshorsterzand, a series of sand dunes worth walking around (beginning from a five-minute drive). After more excitement? Speed down the mountain paths of the Leuvenum forests (25 minutes’ cycle). If you’d rather have a bit peace, book in at the Wellness Resort Zwaluwhoeve (five minutes’ drive) for a blissful afternoon, or grab a rod and flit off for some fishing – and perhaps a spot of swimming – at Ermelo’s sandy beach (20 minutes). To add in some culture, head off to Harderwijk (10 minutes) for the Marius van Dokkum museum, displaying illustrations by the Dutch artist, then wander around the old fishing village at Elburg (20 minutes). A couple of other settlements to chuck on the itinerary include the Netherlands’ smallest city, Staverden (20 minutes), home to just 30 residents, and the much larger metropolis of Apeldoorn (45 minutes) to see the world's second-biggest Van Gogh collection at the Kröller-Müller Museum.
