What lovely – and Dutch – landscape… family-friendly Recreatiecentrum Heumens Bos in the Heumens municipality is beside wide swaths of scenic woodland and Dutch polders dotted with characteristically Netherlands features like windmills, locks and dikes – you'll most certainly require a camera. You'll most certainly require a bike too, so it's handy that cycle hire is available on site to pedal the kilometres' worth of riding routes crisscrossing the local woodland. Go-kart hire is available too, along with a ping pong table, tennis court and several play areas, both indoors and outdoors and for all ages. Heumens Bos also has an outdoor pool and a paddling pool, a restaurant with a terrace, and a shop stuffed with essentials, local items and souvenirs. The site has free wifi.

Cycling and cantering are two of the main activities around Recreatiecentrum Heumens Bos, at the biking trails around its local woodland and at the riding stables 200 metres away, where private lessons and group tuition are both available. Nearby Nijmegen on the Waal river is the oldest town in the Netherlands, celebrating a whopping 2,000 years back in 2005. Several decent museums are among its many sights: have a look at the Africa Museum on the continent's art and culture, the Valkhof museum detailing the city's Roman past as well as its medieval history and modern art, and the House of the History of Nijmegen, a free museum telling the tale of the town. The 12-acre Gardens of Appeltern are also recommend by the Heumens Bos team, along with the outdoor artificial ski slope in Wijchen and the forestside golf course back at Nijmegen.
