  • Family site on the banks of the scenic Okavango river
  • Big five reserves within an hour and a half’s drive
  • Top spot for spectacular sunrises and sunsets
River views, wildlife spotting and fab African sunsets… If that’s what your getaway dreams are made of, make your way to Ngandu Hotel, a relaxed, family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive from the centre of Rundu, a large town on the Namibia-Angola border in the Kavango-East region of northern Namibia. On the banks of the Okavango river, the spacious pitches are a prime base for exploring the area around Rundu. The on-site team can arrange boat cruises, walking trails and village tours for you, or you can strike out on your own for a stroll along the river (keeping your eyes peeled for hippos and crocs) – it’s the natural border between Namibia and Angola, so that’s another country you’re seeing on the other bank. Relax back on site after your explorations by taking a dip in the pool, then deal with your adventure-fuelled hunger with a stop at the on-site restaurant (sit outside for spectacular views over the river to Angola). There are tons of restaurants to try within 10 minutes of Ngandu Hotel too, if you fancy treating yourself. Wash down dins with a drink at the on-site bar, then chill out next to the campfire while soaking up the stunning sunsets (it’s worth getting up early for the sunrise too, if you don’t mind missing a lie-in). Each and every pitch at this site has its own covered area with a sink and private braai for alfresco cooking – stock up on supplies at one of the supermarkets within five minutes of the site, or at the Rundu open market. Guests also have access to communal toilets and showers.

Local attractions

If you were drawn to Ngandu Hotel because of that safari bit and are hoping to spot the big five (elephant, buffalo, lions, leopards and rhinos), you won’t be let down around here: start with Mangetti National Park and Khaudum Game Reserve, both around an hour and a half from Ngandu Hotel, then venture further afield for Popa Game Park (two hours) and Etosha National Park (four hours). Staying out in the wild, make stops on your way to Etosha for Lake Otjikoto – home to arms and ammunition chucked in by the Germans during World War I (visit the museum in Tsumeb for some that have been fished out) – and Lake Guinas, the only two permanent natural lakes in Namibia. Closer to home, wandering the area around Ngandu Hotel is a must – the open market in Rundu is worthy of a poke around for local crafts and edible goodies, and the Mbumza Living Museum and Shambyu museum both give a solid overview of local history. For fab woodcarvings, head a short way out of town to the Ncumcara Community Forestry Craft Centre, where all proceeds are fed back into the community.
