Mad about Venice but not mad about staying in the city? Here’s your answer: book in at The Venice Country, a peaceful and neatly landscaped site at Quarto d’Altino, 25 minutes’ drive and water-taxi ride away from the spectacular beauty of St Mark’s Square. Mind you, there’s so much to do on site that you may never make it into Venice at all. No matter whether you’re travelling solo, with family or friends, you’re sure to find something on this carefully landscaped site that appeals. For starters, you could easily spend a week lazing at the Laguna Bay pool complex with its vast sun deck, waterslides and whirlpool. And there’s more – a multisport court for five-a-side football and tennis, beach volleyball and an equestrian centre for family pony rides. No need to fret about keeping everybody fed and watered either; if you’re going informal, head for La Scuderia Chiosco, open all day for snacks, sandwiches, aperitifs and sunset cocktails overlooking the pool. A little more upmarket, La Scuderia Bistrot serves traditional local pasta and cicchetti (tapas) dishes, all prepared with fresh local ingredients in an elegant setting.

Local attractions

There is much to do out in nature; bike rentals are available for trips into the Veneto countryside or along the Adriatic Sea Cycle Route straight from the pitches. You can also hike or pedal the Via Pordelio boardwalk suspended over Venice Lagoon for views to the islands of Burano and Torcello. Birdwatchers can keep an eye out for egrets, woodpeckers and kingfishers on the waterways of Sile River Regional Nature Park (25 minutes’ drive), or you can head for the beach at Lido di Jesolo (half an hour) to soak up some Adriatic sun. The Venice Country also has an arrangement with a local agency that arranges personalised cruises onto the lagoon for sublime views over the city and its spires. But you really should spend at least a day in Venice (25 minutes) itself. Head for St Mark’s Square to visit the mosaic-encrusted basilica and Palazzo Ducale, then wander along the tangle of backstreets to the Grand Canal to take a gondola ride down the buzzing waterway. There are stunning churches and fascinating galleries to explore, as well as souvenir shops and cosy trattorias to unearth too.
