A Venice camping holiday? That doesn’t sound like something that should be possible, but it’s a reality at Agriturismo Orto Arcobaleno. This site isn’t in the city centre, of course – rather it’s in the grounds of an organic farmhouse in the Zelarino area, northwest of the Mestre district and a 25-minute drive from Venice city centre. That lovely location means that you’ll be able to dip into the city centre whenever you wish, using local bus and train services to reach the lagoon and its islands, but also spend some time away from the crowds at a peaceful rural location. There's a sports centre 15 minutes' drive away from base (in Mestre), and Noale's nature reserve and water park are a 20-minute drive away. Your host Maurizio is keen to make his place more than just a place to stay – he’s set it up as more of a cultural hub where you’ll become part of a welcoming community and experience local Venetian traditions. Jazz events, workshops, group dinners and social evenings are important parts of the schedule here. Sustainability is another big focus; there are organic vegetable gardens on site, plus bikes to borrow to help you get out to explore the immediate surroundings a bit. In between outings to Venice (or Padua, or Treviso), island hopping and social events, you should be able to relax on site, perhaps taking a dip in the outdoor pool or just finding a spot in the gardens or orchard to have a nap or read your book. You’ll also have access to handy facilities including barbecue areas, a small communal kitchen, a food shop and a well-equipped bathroom block with disabled access. Dogs are welcome, and have a dog park where they can have some off-lead exercise.

Disliked The kitchen is terribly dirty, with cockroaches crawling around. It feels like a hippie commune, not a campsite. Can't they afford to use the money they earn to hire good cleaners to keep it clean every day and buy new refrigerators?

Local attractions

Venice is the main draw here, of course, and the farm’s location makes it easy to get to the city centre using local bus services to connect to Venezia Mestre railway station. Using public transport, within 40 minutes you can be floating along the Grand Canal or taking in the sights of St Mark’s Square, Doge’s Palace and Rialto Bridge. It’s not all about the tourist centre though – be sure to get out to some of the outlying islands like Burano (known for colourful houses and lace making), Murano (a famed glass-making hub) and Torcello (with Byzantine architecture). All can be accessed via ferry services from the mainland, as can the beaches of Lido di Venezia. Away from Venice, you may also like to check out the historic attractions of Treviso (half an hour’s drive) and Padua (35 minutes) or visit the grand Palladian villas of the Brenta Riviera – Villa Foscari (20 minutes) and Villa Pisani National Museum (35 minutes) are a couple of the top spots.
