  • Peaceful farm site 10 minutes’ walk from Montjovet in the Aosta Valley
  • Castello di Cly 25 minutes’ drive and Castello Reale di Sarre 35 minut
  • Mountain views; aperitifs and vineyard tours available by reservation
Vineyards, meadows, fields and an agricultural way of life that has continued pretty much unchanged for decades… That’s what it’s all about at Azienda Agricola Agri Mont, a rural touring site on a family-run farm 10 minutes’ walk from Montjovet – known for its distinctive terraced vineyards – and surrounded by the peaks of the Aosta Valley. The site’s simple grass pitches have stunning mountain views, but you’ll need to be self-sufficient in your vehicle as electricity and drinking water are not available. There are no showers either – but what you will have is bags of clean mountain air and the chance to reconnect with the peace of the countryside. The farm owners are happy to share the beauty of their environment with you, and informal farm tours are available if you’d like to meet the livestock. Quality farm-produced meats, cured salamis and artisanal cheese are available to buy and use in your cooking, as well as fine local wines to accompany your food. You can also book evening aperitivo sessions in the vineyard (24-hour notice is needed, please), and when you want to venture out to eat, there are a couple of pizzerias and cafés in Montjovet.

Local attractions

Montjovet (10 minutes’ walk) is a sleepy country village tucked into the forested foothills of the Monte Rosa Alps; you can hike alongside the Dora Baltea River, and visit several local vineyards, where vines grow on terraces clinging to the steep hillsides. More challenging hikes can be found in Parco Naturale del Mont Avic (25 minutes), with paths meandering through rugged terrain to glacier lakes and alpine meadows awash with flowers in early summer. It’s also a steep yomp up to the Cascata di Isollaz from the car park (15 minutes), but worth it to see the tumbling single-spout waterfall. Regional history what you’re seeking? The clifftop ruin of medieval Chateau de Saint-Germain (10 minutes’ drive) was once owned by the all-powerful Savoy family. Other storied Savoy defence castles in the area include Castello di Cly (25 minutes); it’s open for guided tours and has superb views to snow-capped peaks. Moving forward to the 18th century, Castello Reale di Sarre (35 minutes) reveals royal apartments plus walls covered with hunting trophies and portraits of the Savoy kings.
