An agriturismo break surrounded by the splendid scenery of rural Tuscany – but in a location that will allow you to get out easily to explore all those pretty towns, cities and villages you’ve seen gorgeous pics of? Agriturismo Il Sambuco has the answer – this peaceful spot is on the edge of the sleepy village of Uopini in the Tuscan hills, with lovely views all around. It’s all run on sustainable lines, and has pitches scattered across terraces among olive trees to give everyone the best possible backdrop. All of that means this place has a wonderfully rural atmosphere – and yet it’s only 15 minutes’ drive from Siena, with its famed shell-shaped piazza and handsome medieval architecture. Even better, a bus stop 200 metres from the site has hourly services running to the city. Other top spots like Castellina in Chianti and San Gimignano are also within striking distance here – and even Florence is doable, as it’s about an hour’s drive away. In between all those urban adventures, you’ll be able to explore the local landscapes by hitting hiking and bike trails or visiting vineyards. If your idea of Tuscan heaven is lazing by the pool, well, you can do that too, as the site’s swimming pool is available between the hours of 9am and 6pm. Barbecues are welcome on the pitches, but as this place is an agriturismo you can also pre-book tasty and healthy meals made with zero-mile produce from the vegetable garden. Other facilities on site include wifi, hot showers and a chemical disposal point, plus a dog park for your four-legged pals to have a run around.

alle sehr freundlich und bemüht auch der Chef ist sehr hilfsbereit
Wir wurden vonneoner Angestellten nach Siena gefahren, das war sehr sehr freundlich

Disliked Sauberkeit bei den Sanitäranlagen lässt ein wenig zu wünschen, es ist schon sehr abgewohnt

From the manager: gentile cliente, ci dispiace che il soggiorno non sia stato di suo gradimento. Riteniamo che il prezzo delle piazzole sia consono, essendo fornite di acqua potabile, scarichi delle acque chimiche, elettricità, wi-fi, utilizzo della piscina, bagni pubblici e docce. I servizi, seppur non perfetti, sono funzionali e nonostante vengano puliti più volte al giorno, non dipende da noi se l'ospite precedente a voi lascia il bagno sporco. La ringraziamo comunque della recensione e proveremo a migliorarci.

Siena (15 minutes’ drive) surely has to be your first stop – exploring the Piazza del Campo, climbing the Torre del Mangia and visiting the cathedral and Pinacoteca Nazionale. San Gimignano (40 minutes), a hilltop town known for its numerous towers, is often next on the list – or perhaps the lesser-known (but still lovely) Monteriggioni (15 minutes). In fact, there are lots of fabulous towns and villages around here to visit – each with their own character. Wine-producing Castellina in Chianti and the ‘town of crystal’ Colle di Val d’Elsa (both 20 minutes) are a couple of the better-known options, but stops in smaller places often bring rewards of good food, local wine and scenic views. If you have a bit more time, plan days out in Florence and Volterra – both are around an hour’s drive away and full of great things to see and do.
