If you’re looking for a peaceful and family-friendly base from which to discover the manifold attractions of Tuscany, add Raggio di Sole to your list of possibilities. Found at Ghezzano, 10 minutes’ drive from the centre of Pisa, it’s also handy for exploring handsome Lucca (35 minutes by car), Ligurian Sea beaches (40 minutes) and the geothermal waters at San Giuliano Terme (10 minutes). This is a small farm site with a large lawned garden for relaxing in, and a deli where you can order quality home-grown salads, vegetables and bread; they're subject to availability, as many of the products depend on the weather conditions. Now, the practicalities. Bus tickets can be purchased on site to take public transport to the Leaning Tower of Pisa; the bus stop itself is under 10 minutes' walk from the site. The level pitches all have trees around their boundaries for extra privacy and shade from the sun. Water and wastewater disposal are both readily available. There’s also a modern shared toilet block.

Liked Lovely quiet campsite on the edge of Pisa. Easy cycling into town centre about 15mins. Andrea was a great host and very helpful. Shower was clean and hot water plentiful.

Liked Sehr schöner Stellplatz. Nicht weit zur Bushaltestelle nach Pisa. Fahrkarten erhältlich beim freundlichen Betreiber. Frühstücks Service. Alles sauber und gepflegt. Vorallem sehr ruhig. Gutes Angebot an Lebensmitteln und Getränken.

Disliked Ist ein bisschen versteckt und eng die Anfahrt.

Liked El trato de Andrea. El lugar. Las instalaciones cuidadas. La cercanía a Pisa y que puede venderte el billete de bus que lleva a la torre. Las hortalizas y todo lo que alberga en su agroturismo.

Disliked Que el fregadero está sin cubrir, sin apenas luz por la noche y solo tiene agua fría.

Local attractions

No doubt you’ll want to take a selfie of yourself propping up the Leaning Tower of Pisa (10 minutes’ drive), and have a good look around the marble cathedral and Camposanto cloister in the city’s Piazza dei Miracoli. You can also have a stroll along the River Arno, count the statues on the exterior of the waterside Santa Maria della Spina chapel, and admire Keith Haring’s colourful mural ‘Tuttomondo’ (‘All the World’), representing world peace. On the outskirts of Pisa is the Certosa di Calci (15 minutes), formerly a monastery and now a fascinating natural history museum. As well as walking its medieval walls, in Lucca (35 minutes) you can climb up the Guinigi Tower for views over the ancient town. If you’re needing a break from all that splendid culture, head for the therapeutic spas at San Giuliano Terme (10 minutes), hit the hiking paths along around Monte Faeta or take the scenic drive up to the top of Monte Serra (both 40 minutes) for views across the Tuscan countryside.
