  • Small and rural family-friendly site surrounded by the Tuscan hills
  • Piaggio Museum 20 minutes’ drive; Pisa and Empoli both 40 minutes
  • Dog-friendly with a shared kitchen, outdoor dining area and shop
Any time is a good time for a stay at Tuscany Time – this small, friendly site between Capannoli and Palaia (10 minutes’ drive from both) is a place where you can slow down and enjoy some quality time with the kids surrounded by splendid views of the Tuscan hills. The site has been designed to be a cosy and safe place for family holidays – the sort of site where youngsters can run free, meet the owners’ pets (and yes, your dogs are welcome too) and play games in the open air. It’s all about appreciating the simple things, so there’s no long list of facilities here, but you will have access to all the essentials including a shared kitchen area with a barbecue and pizza oven, a sociable outdoor dining area, and a small shop selling local produce. There’s also a launderette and bathrooms with toilets and showers. Days can be spent taking leisurely walks or cycling from village to village through olive groves, perhaps stopping off at the odd winery or café along the way. There are also some great museums to visit in local towns, and you can also use Tuscany Time as a base for day trips to Pisa (40 minutes’ drive) or Florence (an hour and a quarter).

Local attractions

The dinosaur walks, play area and picnic spots at Parco Preistorico di Peccioi (10 minutes’ drive) will keep kids happily occupied for an afternoon. Most people will be intrigued by the thought of a ‘ghost village’, so factor in a visit to the abandoned hilltop hamlet of Toiano (15 minutes), where you can stroll empty streets past gently crumbling churches and cottages. There are striking sculptures to be seen on the hiking trails at Triangolo verde Belvedere (15 minutes) ecopark, a cleverly upcycled former landfill site, while another unusual attraction is the Tempio di Minerva Medica Montefoscoli (five minutes), a neoclassical folly built in 1822 and dedicated to the ancient Roman goddess of learning. If you’re keen to sample local wines, head for Podere La Chiesa (10 minutes), open for vineyard and cellar tours. Admire vintage scooters at the Piaggio Museum (20 minutes), or visit Empoli (40 minutes) for its handsome medieval centre and the glass museum, housed in a former warehouse and showcasing the town’s long tradition of glassmaking.
