  • Leafy and family-friendly seaside site surrounded by Tuscan vineyards
  • Windsurfing, surfing and sailing school next door
  • Direct beach access and restaurant serving seafood specialities
Beach days, clifftop hikes, Tuscan vineyards and pretty much anything else your holiday imagination can come up with are easily arranged at Camping Molino a Fuoco in the Livorno province: if it's not available nearby to get to under your own steam, the staff can arrange tours for days out of all flavours. But there's rather a lot to keep you occupied nearby. This quiet family site is next to the sea, surrounded by long breezy beaches, wooded cliffs and lush green vineyards. There's direct access to the beach through an ancient pine forest that's good for jogging, cycling and long walks, and a windsurfing, surfing and sailing school is right next door. The park has been welcoming guests since 1972 and includes facilities such as that tour booking service, a currency exchange, and a restaurant serving Tuscan seafood specialities and woodfired pizzas. Also at your disposal are a shopping centre with a mini market, a tobacco shop, a greengrocer and a newsagent selling Italian and international papers. Among the amenities are a parent and baby bathroom and coin-operated washing machines and tumble dryers. There's also a fax service and several telephone booths, and wifi is available. The level and grassy pitches are shaded by eucalyptus, tamarisk, poplar and olive trees and separated by mature laurel, privet and oleander hedges: all most pretty indeed.

Local attractions

Woodland walks, bike rides, horseback hacks, and surfing, windsurfing and sailing on the beach next door are all within a couple of minutes of the site – and as its setting is right in the middle of the Etruscan Coast, it's also a short drive from the spectacular pine forests of Cecina and Donoratico and the wooded hills of Bibbona and Monte Calvi. Bolgheri is half an hour's drive away and Pisa within an hour. Wander around the vineyards of Bolgheri – a region famed for its production of premium wines dubbed the 'super Tuscans' – or visit the medieval villages of Castagneto Carducci, Suvereto and Campiglia Marittima, both with splendid fortresses and surrounded by ancient walls. Also worth a day trip is the promontory of Piombino, stuffed full of archaeological spots like the gulf of Baratti and Populonia necropolis over an open-air museum spanning 80 hectares. Stay close to the sea for the necropolis part of the archaeological area, then climb the promontory to potter among the ruins of the city of Populonia: both oh so much worth a lengthy look. Also around is the historic port city of Piombino, filled with restaurants, wine bars and taverns, making it a good place to sample regional wines and local dishes such as baccalà and potatoes and the local fish stew – caciucco, cuttlefish, and stewed or stuffed mussels. Hit Piombino's Piazza Bovio for spectacular views over the coastline; head to Piombino harbour to check out the city's famed daily fish auction, or stroll through 'Little Paris' to see historic buildings like Torrione e Rivellino, Palazzo Nuovo and Cesare Borgia's 16th-century castle.
