There's probably not a person on the planet who wouldn't holler 'hell yes' at a Tuscan seaside site. For here one has the Etruscan coast, the teeny medieval villages, the white glistening beaches and blue sea, and easy access to the likes of Florence, Pisa and Siena… a no-brainer, no? A kilometre or two from all this Tuscan coast goodness is Campo al Fico, a family-friendly site in front of the island of Elba and a short drive from near the old town of Piombino in the province of Livorno, the sailing point for ferries to the Tuscan Archipelago. Bike hire is available if you'd like a gentle pedal down to the nearest beach, but if you're feeling lazy there's a site shuttle bus to take guests to the sands. Campo al Fico has an outdoor pool with waterslide, a play area, tennis courts, a barbecue area and regular entertainment like karaoke, live music, dancing and cabaret in high season. And, if you're also the type who hollers 'hell yes' at the thought of Tuscan cuisine and vino (everyone, then), you can get sorted at the site restaurant dishing up selections of local cuisine, wood oven-baked pizzas, seafood platters and rather tasty regional wines. Meanwhile, regional produce as well as fresh fruit and veg are available in the Campo al Fico shop.

Local attractions

Campo al Fico is in front of the island of Elba (si, the Napolean exile place) and thusly has easy access to Sardinia, Corsica and the other islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. Investigate this section of Etruscan coast first before you set sail island-bound for several days, for weeks' worth of stuff like sandy beaches and cragged cliffs, clear blue waters, forest wanders, small and medieval local villages. The ancient Etruscan town of Piombino is 14 kilometres from the site and is the place to catch ferries direct to Sardinia, Elba, Giglio and Capraia, while highly cultural days can be had at Florence, Siena and Pisa, all a short drive away and all worth a few days each as a sternly recommended minimum. Closer to home are the medieval remnants of Campiglia Marittima and the remains of Rocca San Silvestro; the cloister of the former San Francesco Monastery in Suvereto, and the ancient castle in the frazione Populonia.
