  • Hilltop site a five-minute drive from the Tyrrhenian beach of Baratti
  • Bolgheri 35 minutes’ drive; Riserva Naturale di Caselli 50 minutes
  • Surrounded by olive groves; communal cooking facilities; launderette
There’s a lot more to Tuscany besides vineyard-covered hills and historic cities with spectacular architecture – not that there’s anything wrong with either of those. (Quite the contrary: you might well decide to visit a winery or an art city during your holiday here.) The region’s coastline is also well worth a visit, and peaceful Agricampeggio La Piaggia, on a hill overlooking the Gulf of Baratti (and a 15-minute drive from the town of Piombino) is a great place from where to explore. Spacious pitches with a drinking water supply sit in the shade of pine trees and are surrounded by hedges, which will appeal to those who seek a secluded vibe; on the other hand, if you’re in the mood for making friends, the wooden structure housing communal cooking facilities is probably the place to be. The site also has a well-maintained toilet block (with facilities for disabled guests); hot-water showers, including some outdoor showers for those who can’t bear to tear themselves away from the views of nearby olive groves; and coin-operated washing machines. Backed by a pine forest, the sandy beach at Baratti (five minutes’ drive) is popular with families for its sheltered aspect and shallow waters; several outfits rent out surf- and paddleboards (some also run lessons, excursions and paddleboard yoga classes), and there are a handful of beach bars and restaurants serving locally caught seafood. If you want to combine a day at the seaside with a little culture, the Parco Archeologico di Baratti e Populonia sits just inland from the beach and includes the remains of an ancient Etruscan city, with temples, quarries and burial sites.

Local attractions

At the Parco Archeominerario di San Silvestro (20 minutes’ drive), visitors can don a helmet and head underground to learn about the working lives of the local miners (these hills are rich in copper and lead). If you don’t like enclosed spaces, you might prefer to remain above ground and explore a collection of archaeological and mineral artefacts, or the ruins of a medieval fortress. The area around Bolgheri (35 minutes) is renowned for its many high-end wineries, including Ornellaia and Terre del Marchesato, which organise vineyards visits, tastings and gourmet picnics. Hiking enthusiasts might want to head inland to the Riserva Naturale di Caselli (50 minutes), where woodland trails snake past streams, waterfalls and a historic mining landscape, leading to observation points with views all the way to the sea. Keep your eyes peeled for birds of prey and wolves.
