  • Tuscany site in the grounds of a small traditional food producer
  • A 20-minute drive to Grosseto; 25 minutes to the nearest beach
  • Try cured meats, cheeses, wines and local olive oils at the shop/café
Pick a pitch at Poggio Cascino and get set to embrace the concept of ‘slow food’ – this Tuscany site is part of a company that produces artisan foods using traditional recipes and local home-grown ingredients. It’s not just humans that live at this site in the hills 20 minutes’ drive from Grosseto – take a stroll around the property and you’re bound to spot pigs scratching happily among the trees. Those free-range beasts form the basis for the excellent preservative-free cured meats made on site – you can taste these at the on-site shop/café along with other local products including cheeses, wines and top-quality olive oils. Life on the farm is rather lovely, and you can get more of a sense of it by taking a walk along paths through the woods – come along in the right season and you might also have the chance to pick strawberries, blackberries, asparagus, mushrooms and various herbs. Once you’ve finished that wander, you may like to settle down to take in the views. This site is 192 metres above sea level, and it’s got a lovely outlook over the woods and coast of the Maremma Natural Park and Marina di Alberese nature reserve. There are some splendid beaches along this coast too – if you’d like to go over and have a look it’ll take you about 25 minutes to drive to the closest. Back at the site, a handful of facilities are provided, including wifi and a barbecue, but please note that there are no toilets or showers.

Local attractions

If you’re keen to continue with your theme of sampling local produce, it may be handy to know that there are lots of wineries in the area, making a good collection of whites, reds and grappas and often serving them up along with local eats at their tasting rooms. Perhaps time for some activity to help you work up an appetite? You could head out for a walk through the Maremma Natural Park (20 minutes’ drive), through the Oasi WWF Naturale di Orbetello nature reserve (half an hour) or up to Mulino waterfalls (an hour). Alternatively, there are several watersports on offer in Marina di Grosseto (25 minutes). There’s plenty of scope for a lot of strolling around Grosseto (20 minutes) too – here you can wander around the cathedral, see ancient treasure at the archaeology museum and take a walk along the old city walls. After all that, you may well have earned some time on the beach – perhaps at Marina di Alberese (25 minutes) or Bagno delle Donne (half an hour).
