Pitch with a view

  • Peaceful pitches between olive groves and vineyards at a Chianti farm
  • Halfway between Florence and Siena, both about 40 minutes' drive away
  • Guided wine tour and dinner included for every pitch
It’s hard to know which is the bigger draw for the Chianti area – the fabulous wine or the gorgeous scenery. Mix the two together in one peaceful location and you’ll have a surefire winner of a place to stay for your Tuscany break. The place in question is Azienda Agricola Clantenova, part of a peaceful family-run farm tucked away in the Chianti hills about 10 minutes’ drive from the village of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa. The scenery around here is quite spectacular, and you’ll be able to take it all in from pitches surrounded by the farm’s olive groves and vineyards. And of course those agricultural elements aren’t just about providing an attractive backdrop – they also produce the raw materials for the farm’s olive oils and wines. You can taste these, along with the farm’s honey, while you’re here – and your pitch price also includes a guided wine tour taking you through the vineyards and into the winery for a tasting. This being the Chianti area, there are plenty more wineries to visit nearby, along with traditional villages, vibrant cities and lots of great walking or cycling trails. Throw in historic sights, swimming spots, family attractions and other outdoor activities and you should have plenty to keep you busy while you’re here. In between all these outings, head back to the site for a dip in the outdoor pool or a game of pétanque before settling in for a meal in the restaurant (a meal for two is included in the pitch price). Other facilities include wifi and bathrooms with clean, well-maintained toilets and showers.

Local attractions

Tavarnelle Val di Pesa was historically a stopover point between Siena and Florence, and indeed it’s well located for day trips to those fascinating cities, both of which are about 40 minutes’ drive away. These are surely two of Italy’s most wonderful cities, packed with art, historic architecture and top-notch places to eat. Smaller urban areas are easily accessible too – you may like to spend some time wandering around little villages like Greve in Chianti and Castellina in Chianti (both 25 minutes’ drive) or San Gimignano (35 minutes), known for its 14 medieval towers and its UNESCO-listed town centre. It’s not all about town time, of course – the Chianti hills are packed with wineries, family-owned restaurants and walking or bike trails taking in both the scenery and the cuisine. To see it all from above, you may like to join a hot air balloon flight from the launch site a couple of minutes’ drive away.
