General

  • Wooded park on the banks of the Arno river, 5km from central Florence
  • Cycle into the historic city centre on a quiet riverside bike path
  • Two swimming pools overlooked by sun terrace and restaurant/bar

It’s an excellent idea to bring a bike if you’re staying at Firenze Camping in Town – a dedicated cycle path runs along the banks of the Arno river from here for a safe, swift and scenic ride into the centre of Florence. Travelling light? No problem – adult and kids’ bikes can be hired on site.

This lovely tree-filled park is in the Rovezzano area of Florence, five kilometres from the city centre. If you’re not keen on pedalling, a shuttle bus will transport you to the historic centre to take in all the famed sights, museums and galleries (too many to list, and too many to cram into one visit – best be planning to head into town a few times if you can).

Cycled or museum-ed out after your day trip? Cool off back at base with a dip in one of the pools (a most welcome sight on a hot day in the city): dive into the main pool for an energetic swim, or have a more gentle splash about in the leisure pool, with fountains and other fun things to mess about with. Poolside basking is also an option, either on the loungers around the sun terrace or with drinks on the bar terrace that handily overlooks the water.

And it’s not just drinks on offer at the bar… it’s also open in the mornings for a breakfast buffet (extra charge) and later serves up a menu of Italian classics at lunch and dinner, including some particularly fine pizzas. There’s also a very well stocked mini market on site.

Please note

The bar is open between 01/01 and 31/12.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The grocery shop is open between 01/01 and 31/12.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 15/05 and 01/09 (subject to weather conditions).

Welcome and hospitality, particularly in providing help when we lost the key to our VW California, staff provided blankets, helped us relocate to a cabin as soon as one became available, gave advice on locations to buy replacement clothing and other necessities, arranged for a ‘home’ visit from a local doctor who attended one of us in the Campervan when unwell. The pitches are generously sized and well equipped with power and water, the toilet and shower facilities and waste disposal re all new, clean and efficient. The shuttle bus service into Florence is frequent and reasonable, access along the River Arno cycle path is also good. The bar and restaurant facilities are reasonably priced and well managed. The cabins are also good value. We will definitely return and visit other sites managed by this company

There is nothing not to like.....might be a bit crowded in high season but it was almost full in late September, early October and a really good experience.

Location and easy access to the city centre with a shuttle bus available
    Very Clean and fault-free facilities
Pool area (We did not use this but it looked very good)
Bar and restaurant. Good food, cocktails etc.

    Disliked:

small pitches. not a problem for a small camper but might be for larger vehicles
some noise overnight, but not a real problem. This is a busy site with holiday homes as well as pitches. It would suit families and younger visitors.
Price quite high for our short stay. Note: this is a personal reflection and if we had stayed longer we would have used the pool etc.

Local attractions

It’d be a fine idea to plan several days out in central Florence, allowing you to see all the top sights without having to race around too much. The Uffizi gallery can fill a day on its own, and you’ll no doubt also want to be seeing the cathedral (which had the world’s largest dome at the time of its design), the Ponte Vecchio, Palazzo Vecchio, Giotto’s bell tower, the medieval Santa Croce church, Michelangelo’s David at the Accademia Gallery…

All that history and art can become a little overwhelming if crammed into a short space of time, so make sure to factor in a bit of downtime – perhaps with a cruise down the Arno river on a traditional wooden boat or a stroll through the gorgeous Boboli and Bardini gardens (particularly fine places to be around sunset for their city skyline views).

For a change of scenery, it’ll take you around an hour to get to Siena or Arezzo by car. Similarly, the wineries around San Gimignano are about an hour’s drive away.
