  • Peaceful southeastern Sicily site half an hour’s drive from Syracuse
  • Baroque-era Noto half an hour’s drive; Calamosche Beach 50 minutes
  • Well-equipped bungalow with a swimming pool; restaurant on site
Immersed in the countryside of southeastern Sicily, yet within easy reach of lively Syracuse and elegant baroque Noto (both half an hour’s drive), La Pace dei Sensi is a cosy and quiet retreat offering accommodation in a well-equipped bungalow. Here you’re far removed from day-to-day cares, and equally far from any traffic noise – in fact pretty much all you’ll hear on site is the rustling of leaves and the singing of birds. Built entirely of natural wood, the bungalow blends with its surroundings; inside there’s a compact kitchen with all the essentials, plus a dining space and living area with a TV. It sleeps up to five guests in a combination of bunks and double beds, there’s ample wardrobe space for all the family’s gear, and the modern private bathroom has a powerful shower with guaranteed hot water and all towels supplied. Moving outside, there’s a covered terrace for an alfresco breakfast or an evening drink under the starry sky. You can also swim in your private pool, soak up rays on the sun deck and lounge in the gardens. The small on-site restaurant is handy if you don’t fancy cooking every day, and the site is a springboard to the beach at Calamosche and hiking in the Sicilian hills.

Local attractions

When urban sightseeing is called for, head to the ancient coast city of Syracuse (half an hour’s drive) to marvel at its baroque cathedral, built over an ancient Greek temple, and the vast amphitheatre. Take time to discover the UNESCO-listed islet of Ortigia, once a powerful Greek metropolis and connected to Syracuse by two bridges. Elegant baroque-era Noto (half an hour) has ornate palaces lining the main strip of Corso Vittorio Emanuele, and lots of smart pavement cafés for sipping espresso or local wine while indulging in a bit of people-watching. If you’d rather stick with the untamed Sicilian countryside, don the hiking boots to explore the canyon running through rugged Cavagrande del Cassibile Nature Reserve (15 minutes). Take a picnic to eat on the rocky banks of the River Cassibile, or take a dip in the cooling stepped waterfalls at Laghetti d’Avola (25 minutes) wild swimming spot. A day on the Ionian coastline could take in spectacular Vendicari Nature Reserve (50 minutes), a protected marine park known for its flocks of pink flamingoes and ancient Greek archaeological sites. The park’s sandy Calamosche Beach is a small and protected cove with shallow water that’s safe for swimming and snorkelling around the rocky shoreline.
