Local attractions

Did you really think you were going to come to Sicily without scaling Mount Etna once or twice? It's a 25-minute drive up to the trailhead followed by a difficult but rewarding hike. If you're in any doubt about your mountaineering abilities or want to know more about the geology and landscape, you can book with an authorised Alpine guide at reception or take the cable car and sail up to the summit instead. There are also lots of more moderate trails that follow old lava flows that are accessible straight from the site (ask at reception).

The historic city of Catania (30 minutes) is within your grasp too if you're after something more urban. The coastal Aci Castello and Aci Trezza areas are particularly recommended and come with spectacular views over faraglioni – dramatic offshore rocks eroded by the waves into tottering stone towers.

After trotting about on the coast, turn to the area's pile of kid-friendly attractions to keep little guests in good spirits – there's Acquapark (25 minutes), a wet and wild waterpark with lots of scope for splashing, and Etnaland (20 minutes), a theme park that can be easily reached via the site's end-to-end shuttle service.
