  • On the north-west coast of Sardinia, 10 minutes from Alghero
  • In a setting of pine trees, eucalyptus and white sandy beaches
  • Restaurant and pizzeria; supermarket selling groceries and fresh meat
These are indeed blue waters – and how. On the north-west coast of smashing Sardinia, Camping Village Laguna Blu's pitches are in the shade of the pine forest and along the shore of the Calich lagoon, a short drive from the splendid waters and fine white sands of seaside town Alghero, on the Coral Coast. (And if you dig old piles too, Alghero's been described as one of the most beautiful medieval cities in Sardinia.) Beaches and dunes, watersports and fishing, diving and ancient sites are all near Village Laguna Blu, on a modern and comfy park surrounded by lush vegetation stuffed with pine and eucalyptus trees. Sandy days are much much recommended here, as are days in the water, or exploring the caves of the Punta Giglio promontory, or hiking the Regional Nature Park of Porto Conte, or – just possibly – sinking down in the shade for a long relaxation session under the shade of a local tree. A restaurant and pizzeria with takeaway mean you can sort traditional Italian food without having to stir too far from your pitch (always a plus), and the well-stocked supermarket sells groceries, local produce and meat for alfresco eats pitchside (barbecues are allowed). For active times – possibly not straight after a trip to the restaurant or pizzeria – Laguna Blu has a big playground, loads of space to roam, a football pitch, a TV room, a games room and a waterpark (newly installed in 2018 with pools, lounging space and a kids' pool/water play area for the small sorts' splashing and sliding).

Electric mixed pitch

Liked: There is a well-stocked supermarket, a really nice pool (bring a swim cap - compulsory) and very frequent water taps. Very good and clean facilities and friedly staff. Good safety on camp and kids entertainment. As Alghero is tricky for parking, the proximity of a bus stop is great. Tickets can be bought at the reception for 1euro.

Disliked: Lengthy check-in. The fact that you have a tent pitch booked does not mean it is not taken -we ended up bouncing but the friendliness of the staff made up for the chaos. Pine wood shaded pitch is necessary in July. The sea is close but not very clean.

Great for the pool. Staff friendly but disorganised. Too many rules.

Electric mixed pitch

Liked: Swimming pool

Disliked: The extremely disorganised check in where staff did not know which pitches were taken. Also did not like having to wear a wrist band and wearing swimming caps in the pool.

Local attractions

This beaut setting on Sardinia's north-west coast is under 15 minutes' drive or about 20 minutes by bus from the spectacular fortified town of Alghero, settled since prehistoric times and colonised by the Crown of Aragon among others (Catalan is still an official language of the town, so no need to blink in a puzzled manner if you hear it out and about around this part of Italy). Archaeological sites by the pile are around Alghero – see for example the Anghelu Ruju necropolis and the seven towers and three forts of the old walls – but there are several beaches around town too if your tastes tend more towards the sandy. Two protected nature areas, the Regional Nature Park of Porto Conte and the Area Marina Protetta Capo Caccia - Isola Piana, are in the vicinity for walks and wildlife wanders. This is a land of caves and caverns too, so go to see the stalactite cave of Neptune's Grotto, about 25 minutes' drive away in the Porto Conte natural park on the southernmost tip of Cape Caccia, or investigate the caves – and coves – of the Punta Giglio promontory. Watersports, birdwatching, diving and fishing are also available nearby.
