  • Eco-conscious site in the countryside 35 minutes’ drive from Cagliari
  • Dolianova five minutes’ drive; Capo Carbonara an hour and 15 minutes
  • Naturist-friendly site; dogs welcome; artworks in the woods
About 35 minutes’ drive north of the Sardinian capital Cagliari, in a peaceful area of fruit groves-covered hills, Libertatia is a cosy site with impeccable environmental credentials. Facilities at this wild-camping spot include a composting toilet (but a pretty luxurious one, with plenty of room to manoeuvre and interesting knick-knacks on display) and a gravity-fed solar shower; both are housed in bamboo sheds with a solid stone base. There are recycling stations and chlorinated rainwater tanks, too, plus concessions to modern living in the shape of electricity and a communal refrigerator. Dogs are welcome at the site, which extends over an area of remote woodland dotted with artworks. The remoteness might inspire you to bare all – if so, feel free to go ahead: Libertatia is naturist-friendly. The surrounding area is laced with trails that might take you to archaeological sites such as the Tomba Ipogeica di Bau Su Matutzu (20 minutes’ walk), a prehistoric burial site; or the Pozzo Nuragico Sa Gruttixedda (40 minutes on foot), the remains of a sacred well. And if that piques your interest in Sardinia’s history, a half-hour drive due east takes you to a mountainous area littered with megalithic stone towers known as ‘nuraghe’. For something more relaxing, head to the coast. Cagliari’s Poetto beach is a long crescent of golden sand backed by the Molentargius Park wetlands, which are home to pink flamingoes.

Local attractions

The town of Dolianova (five minutes’ drive), which will be your go-to place for shopping and dining out, has an excellent museum exploring the history and production of olive oil. It’s worth splurging on the signature experience, with guided tours of the facilities and a tasting accompanied by Sardinian charcuterie and wine. In Cagliari (35 minutes), the Bastione di Saint Remy is a monumental complex with an elegant covered promenade and spectacular views from the expansive terrace. Ancient remains within the city include a Roman amphitheatre and the large Tuvixeddu necropolis. EXMA - Centro Comunale d’Arte e Cultura is a cultural hub organising talks, music and film screenings. At the Protected Marine Area of Capo Carbonara (an hour and 15 minutes), in Sardinia’s south-eastern corner, you can relax on the white sand at Campulongu or Porto Giunco beaches (the latter next to a pond with flamingoes), and swim and snorkel in the reserve’s crystal-clear waters.
