Riva Mare is exactly where its name says it is: on the sea shore. That’s the shore of the Ionian Sea, in case you were wondering, which around these parts (the Salento area of Puglia) is renowned for its crystal-clear waters. The site has direct access to a wide white-sand beach where you can hire umbrellas and sun loungers. So far, so excellent – especially for those who wish to spend their holidays swimming or paddleboarding.
However, this peaceful site (which is fenced and monitored 24/7) is also in a sweet spot for practical types who like to keep on top of daily chores such as grocery shopping: the resort of Torre San Giovanni, with its shops and restaurants (plus pharmacies and other services), is a 10-minute walk away (or a five-minute drive).
Shaded grass and sand motorhome pitches come with optional electric hook-up (for an extra fee), and facilities include a playground, a dog park and picnic tables where you can devour meals from the on-site restaurant or your own picnic, created with quality ingredients sourced from local vendors. There are also toilet/shower facilities (including bathrooms with wide doorways for wheelchair accessibility), a launderette and a drying room.
A bike-hiring service makes it possible to explore the area on two wheels. You might want to stick to the coastline and the beaches, or head inland to visit places like Ugento (25 minutes’ bike ride, or 10 minutes by car), home to an archaeological museum with artefacts unearthed locally.

Local attractions
Gallipoli (25 minutes’ drive) has heaps to commend it, besides its spectacular beaches. Cross the bridge to the island that is home to the Old Town, with its 15th-century castle, a cathedral with an elaborately ornate façade and cobbled alleyways lined by pretty whitewashed homes.
Santa Maria di Leuca (half an hour) is the southernmost point of Italy’s boot spur, and it sits where the Ionian Sea meets the Adriatic. Climb the headland to visit the Sanctuary of Santa Maria de Finibus Terrae, with splendid views over the water. Going on a boat trip means you get to explore the caves and grottoes that dot the nearby coastline.
The Giuseppe Garibaldi Public Gardens in Lecce (50 minutes) have fountains, shaded paths and a central folly. The city is known for its Baroque architecture, which is visible in structures such as the remarkable Basilica of the Holy Cross. The Children’s Museum has interactive hands-on displays.
