- Shaded pitches a 15-minute walk from a beach on the Gulf of Taranto
- Gallipoli 15 minutes’ drive; Lecce 40 minutes
- Dog-friendly; pool and tennis court; kids’ club; evening entertainment
If you plan to spend some time exploring the Salento peninsula, then Baia di Gallipoli Camping Village, on the west coast, might just be the accommodation for you. Why is that? Well, first of all its enviable position: in the middle of the rich countryside of the Puglia region, and within a 15-minute walk of the coast and the Gulf of Taranto.
And what a walk it is. Although the opening stretch is on a dirt road with no shade (be sure to wear sunscreen), you soon reach a thick pine forest, followed by sand dunes dotted with fragrant Mediterranean scrub and wild lilies. Beyond all this (which, by the way, is part of the Parco Naturale Regionale Isola di Sant’Andrea e Litorale di Punta Pizzo) are the spectacular waters of Spiaggia di Punta della Suina beach, where you can hire sun loungers or simply unfurl your towel (in the ‘spiaggia libera’ section).
If you can’t face that walk, the on-site outdoor pool comes with a large paved area with umbrellas. Meanwhile, facilities for active types include tennis courts, a basketball court and a gym, and there is also an abundance of green areas where guests can walk their canine companions or simply wind down.
In addition to a kids’ club that ought to keep your offspring pretty busy (whether through sporting activities or fun contests), there is evening entertainment for the whole family, ranging from dancing soirées to karaoke sessions.
A restaurant serves regional specialities (including the iconic orecchiette), and there are gorgeous sunset views from the bar terrace.

Local attractions
Gallipoli (15 minutes’ drive) occupies a spur stretching into the Gulf of Taranto. Walk along shop-lined Corso Roma boulevard, past the Greek Fountain (not from the days of ancient Greece, but dating from the 16th century), to reach the old town, on a small separate island.
From June to September, San Lorenzo Astronomical Park (half an hour) runs themed evenings that include guided stargazing sessions with the centre’s powerful telescopes. The Museo del Cosmonauta has displays on space exploration.
Lecce (40 minutes) is famed for its Baroque architecture, with highlights including the gorgeously ornate façade of Basilica di Santa Croce and the cathedral, which features a gilded interior. There is also a Roman Amphitheatre dating from the 2nd century, plus tree-lined paths at the Giardini Pubblici Giuseppe Garibaldi gardens.
